XP changed!

Last night my computer was fine, no problems. This morning everything

changed. turn on and get a new XP screen like it had just been install or a

new user was added.

Can not do a system restore, "states system restore turned off" which it

never was.

My docs, outlook express, etc. is empty to. Also, can not run safe mode,

stops loading at an agp file.

When I go to start/explore, there is a new file under users - GT2POK377F80.

Does anyone have any idea what the heck happened?

Thanks!

Virus? Trojan? Worm? Malware in general? Time to break out the

scanners IMO IF YOU REALLY MADE NO CHANGES!

If you do come to the conclusion that it is indeed a virus, you may be

interested in the reply to my recent post.

BartPE - specifically - look into the Windows Ultimate Boot CD. It'll do

what you want and much more. I don't believe any computer tech who will be

troubleshooting regular users' computers should be without an Ultimate Boot

CD and a Windows Ultimate Boot CD. ;-)

Are you using the GT2 webcam - which modifies the video (agp)?

Either way, is your profile still listed?

Re: XP changed!

What are are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on

the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,

Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Check the System log of Event Viewer for Error Reports.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the

System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or

Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what happened, although it doesn't sound very good. You

have back ups for your data and email, right?

Well, I don't think you quite ran "all of them, but maybe all that you

have available.

What are the names of the programs you ran, and were they each updated

within the last day or so before you use them? It's best to check for

updates before each use, actually unless it's been done within the last

day or so.

If you list what you ran, there may be obvious holes that another

program is good at closing. Not all scanners are created equal by any

means.

Have you looked at Even Viewer to see if there are any hints there?

Look specifically for the errors for the dates since that started

happening. Actually, when I have a repeatable problem, I clear all the

logs so I know everything I'm looking at is current.
