I'm going to upgrade from XP home to XP Pro, however I read, I should

ue the Upgrade XP Pro.

1) What about if I use the full version XP Pro SP2?

2) I use Firefox for navigating and Thunderbird for e-mail. Could the

upgrade change my settings? i.e. Install IE and Outlook Express as

defaults?

The only difference will be that Pro standard edition will not ask you to

prove that you own a copy of Windows eligible for upgrade. To upgrade from

Home to Pro with either an upgrade or standard cd insert the Pro cd while

Home is running and launch the upgrade setup from the Home desktop. Both

the upgrade and standard cds can upgrade or do a clean install.

To clean install Pro (no upgrade) start the computer with the Pro cd.

1.) You would need a full retail version of XP Pro in order to upgrade your XP

Home installation. The impact of taking this route is the wasting of $100

dollars in the US. Convert to your local currency to figure out the impact this

would have on you personally. Keep in mind that an OEM version, which is less

expensive than a retail copy, is meant to perform a clean installation. It's not

supposed to be used to do an upgrade.

2. ) It shouldn't and even if it did you can easily change back through either

the programs themselves or Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Programs tab.

As a general comment, I'll ask the same question Frank V did, what's the reason

for upgrading from Home to Pro? Do you need to join this computer to a domain?

Other than that, there is little difference between XP Home and XP Pro.

Good luck

No, he can upgrade Home to Pro with an upgrade edition cd. Home is in the

upgrade matrix for Pro and I have done it just by launching Setup with the

splash screen that comes up on the Home desktop after inserting the Pro

upgrade edition cd. A standard edition is not required.

Are you thinking of Office which does not support that?

Re: Impact of upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro

No, I'm not thinking of Office.

Where did I say he couldn't use an Upgrade CD?

The OP asked about using a full version XP Pro CD. I tried to point out that

while a full Retail CD is capable of doing an upgrade, it's money wasted. In my

neighborhood it's the difference between $299 for full and $199 for upgrade.

That statement in and of itself implies that I know he can use an upgrade CD to

go from XP HE to XP Pro.

I'm guessing that the OP is considering using an OEM XP Pro CD which around here

would be $139. I don't think you can upgrade XP HE to XP Pro using an OEM CD.

That's what I was trying to point out.

Since you asked, I quote from you, "1.) You would need a full retail version

Re: Impact of upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro

The key word in that sentence is retail. What I was trying to convey to the OP

was the fact that if he wanted to use a full version CD it had to be the retail

one, not an OEM.
