Hi, whilst trying to update my video drivers i managed to disable the display adaptor, now when my pc starts up i see the windows logo and startup bar but when the pc would normally show the desktop i see nothing ! aaargh !

I have an emachines 3028 tower running xp home, i wouldnt mind if the solution meant i had to reinstall the os (preinstalled) but i cant remember how to do this, the e machines help said i'd to reboot whilst holding f11 but this only leads to a startup screen for safe mode etc and not the system restore. Any help would be greatly appreciated and i promise not to meddle with things i dont understand in future ! Atb :D

Hi, yes i have tried booting in safe mode but it will not complete the startup no matter how long i leave it for. I'm away from my pc at the mo so cant tell you exactly what the pc says but it sticks on the same line each time and freezes..........

Hey all, have just retried starting in safe mode and the pc freezes whilst loading the drivers, the last line displayed is

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windoes\system32\drivers\agpCPQ.sys

It doesnt matter how long i leave the pc or which form of safe mode i start in.

Hope this sheds some light to someone cos its total gobbledegook for me !

Thanks in advance:D

It just basically says that there is a problem with the AGP driver.

have you checked in the BIOS that the onboard GPU is enabled?

Hey Webby123

i dont know what the onboard GPU is ?.

This just stands for Graphics Processing Unit ( or Video card in English) this sends the signal of what to display on your monitor or TV

Hope this helps you

This is rushed, but to give you an idea, between the difference:-

Now where it says add in, one of those additional slots is where your graphics card would be on the PC

If the onboard you were using wasn't good enough then yes get an add in one,

BUT you are very limited with AGP cards, as they are dated..

A few things you need to check prior to buying a new card:-

* What size monitor you have plays a big part in choosing a card

* Current PSU wattage (some GPUs require lots of power)

* Do you have space in the case for the card you are looking at as some cards now are over a foot long and can take up 3 slots on the MOBO

If you no longer use your modem card then remove it, as it uses power :)

Well i have just uprated the psu as the old one went kaput so i know i have some capacity there (old 300w new 500w). the monitor is 17" flatscreen.

I believe there is space in the mobo for other cards i currently have two spare slots next to the soon to be removed modem card and then another similar slot slightly longer and set back a little furter from the pc casing. hope that makes sense.

Do you have any tips or recommendations for which card to purchase or should i start that in a seperate thread? Thanks for any help.;)

Well I had a look on the eMachines website, and any reference I could find, when I clicked on a page it wasn't there - so thats a good start :(

After looking more it has an Intel D101GGC Motherboard and according to here:-

It has a PCI-E x16 slot so the choice is endless :)

Well, i was trying to play microsoft flight sim x which requires divx 9.1 or higher ? i've already upgraded the ram to suit, i suppose in reality i'd only need a mid level card thats capable of running the flight sim smoothly, i'm not a massive pc gamer but i really like the flight sims etc I suppose i'd want the best bang for the buck so to speak as i just dont game enough to warrant spending loads.

Many thanks.

Right the problem that you have is that your using XP which doesnt do DirectX 10 (it can in theory but I have seen all sorts of issues trying to get the thing running right) or 11 (this it wont do)

You can use something like a XFX Radeon HD5770 1GB which is around £105, it supports DX11.

But the next issue you will have is the CPU, flight sim uses lots and lots of CPU power.

If you play/want to play flight sim games you ideally need a better machine, dual or quad chip around the 2.5GHz mark per core and at least 3GB RAM with W7 ideally
