SP3 for XP Media Center

I have Windows XP Media Center w. SP2 and was urged to by Windows update to

install SP 3.

Do I really need it?

I have no idea if _you_ really *need* it. If you plan to continue using

Windows XP for the next two+ years and think you might desire to continue

receiving updates from Microsoft for Windows XP - you will want to install

SP3 sooner or later (at some point it *will* become a requirement to

get/install updates.

 

SP3 willl not likely change - what is released now will be the same in 6

months. The only reason to wait is to allow others to trudge through the

issues and solve them so you can come in and hopefully fix any issues you

run into either beforehand or with a simple Google search.

 

No matter what you decide to do (and it is ALWAYS your decision)... do it

wisely. Backup your stuff, read up, research and then go for it.

Key things to note:

 

Internet Explorer:

"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of

Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall

Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta

version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP

SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,

uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

 

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:

"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center

Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To

avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If

this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows

XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

 

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing

SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair

installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for

that...

 

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

installation

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.

2. After booting into Safe Mode:

Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)

sc config intelppm start= disabled

--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Do you even need a computer? Read the release notes and decide. You will

eventually need it to continue to receive critical updates to your OS but

when you upgrade is up to you.

You would be wise to make sure you are up to date on all the other

updates, however.

Product key for installation/activation?

Came with your computer/copy/license of Windows XP Media Center Edition.

(Sticker on the computer, sticker in the packaging with your copy, etc.)

 

If you have it installed and functioning (licensed/activated) - use Belarc

Advisor to find the key used.
