.NET v2.0/SP2 Install Hangs AMD Machine

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

OS: XP Professional 64-bit/SP2

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+em

MB: K8N Neo4-F BIOS v1.9.090905 0

After installing .NET 2.0/SP2 into the above environment, the machine boots

to GINA but shortly thereafter hangs.

Also hangs when booting up in safe mode.

Any known issues with this combination?

Thanks in advance.

TonyF

Tony,

Can the system be booted to Safe Mode with a Command Prompt ?

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

If yes, then use the restore point created when .NET 2 SP1 was being

installed [if the SP came down by Automatic Updates then the restore

point will be named Software Distribution 3.0. You'll have to recall the

exact date to use that restore point.]

Or, use the previous one if it was created recent to the attempted

installation.

If not, use : How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Under ' How to use the Recovery Console ' there are instructions for

booting from the XP CD into the RC. Once in RC mode, disable the

Automatic Updates and Windows Installer services.

To disable the Automatic Updates and Windows Installer services, type

these commands at the prompt, pressing Enter after each one:

disable wuauserv

disable msiserv

Exit RC and try to restart to normal Window mode.

If doing the above allows the system to start up normally, then delete

the contents of

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download <--- this subfolder

That will prevent another attempt at installing .NET 2 SP1.

Reenable Automatic Updates and Windows Installer from within the

Services console after doing the above.

Suggest you see if running the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Registration

Correction Tool resolves this installation issue:

The .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 installation fails on a computer that has the

..NET Framework 2.0 installed and that is running Windows XP, Windows

Server 2003, or Windows 2000

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951950

> The tool writes a running log under the %TEMP%\dd_clwireg.txt folder. You can view this log for more

> information about what the tool is doing.

The above tool fixes issues caused by running registry or disk cleanup

tools that will affect installation of .NET 2 updates and SPs.

IF you get the system back up and are able to run the above tool, please

post dd_clwireg.txt before attempting another installation of SP1.

Re: .NET v2.0/SP2 Install Hangs AMD Machine

Thanks for the feedback.

As suggested, I've tried to:

* boot to Safe Mode/Command Prompt (and every other option)

* the recovery console angle (i.e., disable services, delete the discovery

folder, etc.) -- Each without success.

To move things along, I installed xp/64-bit onto a different different drive

on the same machine, and all is working again. It's troubling though

because I've been able to duplicate this post .NET v2.x issue on more than

one occassion on this one specific machine.

For now I plan NOT to install .NET v2.x on this particular hardware

platform. Not happy about it but...

Again, thanks for the feedback/suggestions.

Regards,

TonyF

Re: .NET v2.0/SP2 Install Hangs AMD Machine

You're mowst welcome, Tony. .NET Framework installations and applying

updates/Service Packs are finicky.

1) Antivirus software *may* interfere with the proper installation of

the Frameworks. Future installation of updates/SPs are affected.

2) Running disk or registry cleanup 'tools' has been identified as a

cause of updates and SPs failing to install.

3) The ATI Catalyst Control Center [ if an ATI video adapter is

installed ]can prevent files from being replaced when an update/SP are

installed.

[ Stopping Control Center will resolve this issue ]

This is the first time I've seen a post where the application of an SP

for a .NET Framework caused a system to be unbootable. Which leads me to

believe that there is hardware present that has software control

features that are dependent upon .NET Framework 2.

Yep -- I agree with you final comment that the hardware is wacked-out,

especially considering it's not a "branded" pc.

Thanks again for pitching-in.
