Windows Explorer Crashes

I have been having a lot of "Windows Explorer" crashes when attempting to

open a folder.

Is there anything new out there to solve this lingering problem?

XP Pro SP3 (RTM)

Thanks,

Are you double clicking on the folder.

Can you please post a copy of the Event Viewer Error Report?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? What firewall

are you using?

In Google there is only one reference to this file. The site suggests it

is malware but no supporting information is given.

I'm Running Norton 360, v2, and the Norton 360 firewall.

The problem existed prior to using Norton 360, when I was using

Re: Windows Explorer Crashes

Ben

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and

verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked

and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need

to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that

the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Use Windows Explorer to search for embiconext.dll. Searching from

Windows Explorer opt to Search My Computer, enter file naname and check

Advanced Options and the top three options from the drop down menu under

Advanced Options.

If you find it can you please post the complete path.

Also search the Registry for embiconext.dll. Select Start, Run, type

"regedit" without quotes, and hit OK. Use Edit, Find to search My

Computer for embiconext.dll

Search and Regedit finds: C:\Program Files\S&S

Computing\IconExt\SewIconzExt.dll

This is from a know program that generates Icons from Embroidery Design

Files, and is a trusted source.

I would uninstall the programme and see whether the the error ceases.

You can always reinstall.

That dll has a suspicious name. I would scan for malware.

Nevermind. Just read the rest of the thread. I'd definitely follow

Gerry's advice.
