Updates won't download

The installing update icon in the lower right hand corner shows that updates

are being downloaded but it doesn't happen as it shows 0% and then

disappears. I know that I should be getting updates to my antivirus software.

The antivirus software does not use Windows automatic updates to obtain

newer virus definitions unless OneCare is installed.

Please post the last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log the next

time the icon disappears:

Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the below into the Open: line and

then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll all the way to *the bottom* of the log for the most recent entries.

Here is the update log that I ran right after the icon disappeared. I've

been using this antivirus for quite awhile and everything has always updated

in the past. In fact the last update was done on 5/10.

Re: Updates won't download

0x80072f78 ERROR_HTTP_INVALID_SERVER_RESPONSE

The server response could not be parsed.

Just because the system could previously update with the installed

antivirus does not mean that the AV has not corrupted files, logs, or

datastores that are needed to update. It may have been a case of a bad

virus definition that was installed; it may be that the AV has scanned

locked objects as described above and corrupted them; it may very well

be that the AV is incompatible with Windows, although the manufacturer

states that it is [ hello Norton, McAfee ! ].

What is the installed AV and did this issue occur after the AV installed

virus definitions on the day updating ceased to function ?

You could attempt a System Restore back to just *after* May 10th, as

you've stated that updates installed that day. DO NOT use the May 10th

restore point as that will uninstall the updates installed that day.

Will wait till you inform us of the AV situation.

BTW, is IE 7 installed ?
