Hello,

For quite sometime, wins auto update has not been starting automatically on

my system. I have configured the settings (in XP sp2) to search and notify,

but for more than a month, the icon has failed to pop up with any

notifications. Any ideas wot might be the problem.

Re: windows automatic update?

Open the Services console and check to see if the Automatic Updates

service is set to Automatic.

*Right* click My Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose

' Manage '

Expand Service and Applications by clicking the plus sign next to it

Click on Services

In the right frame, click on Automatic Updates

Is there a Stop or Restart link showing ?

If yes, then AU is running.

If no, then double click on Automatic Updates and set the Startup type

to 'Automatic'.

Click Apply, OK.

Restart the system.

Did it stay Automatic or did it shut off again ?

If it shut off there could be either malware present, there is some file

corruption, or files need to be registered that is affecting the AU service.

Also, check to see if Background Intelligent Transfer Service [bITS],

the Cryptographic service, and Remote Procedural Call [RPC] are all set

to Automatic. ( BITS can also be set to Manual in order to do Automatic

Updating )

What is the installed antivirus and/or anti-malware software ?

Is a 3rd party firewall included with a security suite being used ?

Re: windows automatic update?

Hello,

I have checked in the Services console and automatic updates is running (it

has a stop or restart link showing). also BITS and RPC are also running. AU

is also set to automatic and everything look OK in the services panel.

I have installed Mcafee security center suit with firewall protection. could

this possible be a problem. And if so, how can I be sure it is not blocking

AU from synching up.

Cheers.

Re: windows automatic update?

If the issue appeared after installing McAfee then it's being caused by

McAfee.

Have you checked in McAfee's Security Center to see if it wants to

control automatic updating ?

Without knowing the specific name and version of the McAfee 'product'

any further advice is just guessing.

Re: windows automatic update?

"svchost" which is responsible for AU is running in memory and Mcaffee

grants it full access. However, I have windows defender also running

(simultaneously). I will just go ahead and disable one for another and see

what happens.

Cheers.

Disabling Windows Defender will do *nothing* to resolve the issue.

You could attempt to have the system check for updates and then post the

last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log [located in WINDOWS].

Go to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste the below into the Open: line]

wuauclt /detectnow

Click OK or press Enter

Wait a while and then open the WU.log and post the *last 50 or so lines*.

Re: windows automatic update?

Hello,

The specific name of the software suit is Mcafee Security Center 8.1, using

virus scan version 12.1 and Personal Firewall version 9.1.

I have attached a copy of the window update log file created today. I could

see couple of errors/fails but couldnt make any sense out of it.

Thanks so far though.

Cheers.

The authentication method is not supported. -

CoCreateInstance(IBackgroundCopyManager) fails with E_ACCESSDENIED

(0x80070005) in this condition

Something in Security Center is preventing communication between the

update server and the system:

Suggest you post to the McAfee SecurityCenter 8.0 support forum:

http://community.mcafee.com/forumdisplay.php?s=e25bb37af196dccea665fe5129d39663&f=213

IF McAfee SecurityCenter was provided by a ' Partner or Provider ', then

go here: http://service.mcafee.com/TechSupportHome.aspx?lc=1033&sg=TS

Click the appropriate icon in the right frame.

Re: windows automatic update?

Hi,

I disabled the spyware protection and script scanning. I also disabled the

antivirus automatic update.

I typed the following commands (got off a support website) at the prompt:

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll

net start wuauserv

exit

Windows automatic update came up but did not download at all. it later went

off.

I checked the log again and still got the same PTError. I am still reducing

the number of startup items in the Mcafee suit.

Cheers.

Yemi.

Re: windows automatic update?

Adeyemi,

Consult the User Manual to learn how to completely disable McAfee's

functions. Or, visit their web site. This includes the firewall, too.

*BEFORE* you disable the firewall and the McAfee suite, *disconnect* the

system from any network/internet connection.

ENABLE the native XP firewall prior to reconnecting.

Re: windows automatic update?

Hello,

I disabled the mcafee firewall and restarted windows defender. AU is now

working fine and updating. Thanks man for the time. It was quite a gruesome

thing getting around.

Cheers.

reputation as one of the leading causes of update issues. Usually, it's

their firewall.

Glad to hear you've gotten this sorted out.
