So I've been using Vista ever since it came out basically and I'm more or less quite happy with it. I wouldn't want to go back to XP, except for two issues that just keep getting worse and worse.

Boot

Compared to XP (on a similar machine) and Ubuntu on the same machine, Vista takes forever to boot, and I don't know, this is the first time I've actually measured it, but I keep thinking it just got worse and worse over time.

From me pressing enter at bootloader to Login-Screen: 1:38 (Loading bar until about 1:10, then black till at about 1:30ish that vista logo animation, and login screen finally ready for input at 1:38)

20 seconds between entering password and usable Desktop (it shows much quicker than this, but I can't actually do anything until about 20 seconds)

So, I know about background programs that auto-load, Windows defender tells me only stuff loading are:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

C:\Windows\explorer.exe

C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe

C:\Windows\ehome\ehTray.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

C:\Windows\SOUNDMAN.EXE (which is a realtek app)

I know about defragging, and I have defragged using PerfectDisk 2008.

Install Size

This is probably the worse off the two....my freaking install keeps growing and growing and growing....I'm running out of space!

Windows Folder: 9,76 GB acc. to Explore -> 18,4 GB with third party tool (SequoiaView)

Windows\winsxs folder: 0 acc. to Explorer -> 11,4 GB with third party tool (Seriously!!???)

Because my free space is really getting less, I trust third party tool, think Explorer doesn't count that folder for some reason.

Theres tons of files in there, even wmv stuff. I don't need/want that.

Each Windows update it gets worse I think....I googled but it says under no circumstances deleted folders/files in there. Anything I can do to get rid of all that those backups and whatnot? I tried Deleting old System Restore points, but there really is no effect.

So, I dont know...maybe somebody could help me? Or perhaps we can all post some comparison values, maybe this is normal? I don't know....but it's getting a bit frustrating.

I bet if I did a fresh install and only update SP1, I don't know about startup (although as said I feel it used to be noticably faster), but I bet that stupid winsxs folder would take up half my C: partition. Needless to say I don't want to reinstall.

Thnx for listening to my little rant and perhaps this can be productive and somebody can help me :-)

Hardware:

Athlon X2 2,6 GhZ, 2GB DDR, Seagate 160 GB Sata (primary partition 30GB).

OS:

Windows Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 + all patches
