seeing drives on terminal

[Guest Phil Rushton]

We have 2 networks both are simple WORKGROUPS. Both run Windows Server 2003.

Both run Terminal services via RDP on Thin Clients or old PC's running

Windows 2k SR4. The two networks are not connected.

 

I need to see the CD and USB drives on the terminals so I've ticked the

Drives box on the RDP.

 

On the first network I can see the drives from each of the terminals in a

terminal session but on the second network I can't see any of them on any

session.

 

The only thing that is different (as far as I can see) is that the second

network has the TS CAL's activated and the first network does not yet have

them activated, because I'm still building it.

 

What has happened to the drives?

Licensing has nothing to do with this.

You need to enable drive redirection on both the clients and the

server, it's not clear to me where you have enabled it.

Hi Vera

 

On the client terminal in the RDP dialogue box under 'Local Resources' I

have ticked 'Disk drives' in the 'Local resouces' section. This works and

displays the drives when logged on to the server in one network but not the

other. To my knowledge nothing on the two servers has been changed from the

default setup except the licensing.

On the server, go to Terminal Services Configuration - rdp-tcp

connection - Client settings and make sure that client drive

redirection is not disabled.

Thanks Vera, that worked.

 

I don't know why that setting was changed. It will be interesting to see

what happens on the other machine when I activate the TS licences.

I'm afraid I was a bit premature with that last comment.

 

I tested your advice on the system that was working. I switched the drive

redirection on and off successfully. I then went to our other office

expecting to do the same thing and it does not work. I've tried every

combination of tick-boxes in Terminal Services Configuration and on the

client and nothing happens at all.

Could not see anything obvious in the event logs, however did a routine

patch install and rebooted server. It works fine!!!
