Lost Search facility

When I press 'Search' in Windows Explorer the Search dialogue no

longer appears. Instead a two-pane window is replaced by a single pane

window.

Any idea what's happened and how to cure?

Thanks

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

I'm afraid that hasn't solved the problem either.

I tried Start > Search. A 2-pane window comes up but the left hand

pane - which should contain the options for searching - is blank (a

sort of pale beige colour).

Here are a few things you might try.. I can't duplicate your problem so

I can't find a way out of it.

- Add Common Tasks.

Click Start, Run - Type:

control folders ( Press {ENTER} key)

Select "Show common tasks in folders"

Click OK.

- Press Ctrl/E

- Several dialog boxes are blank:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430

- From http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm

Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf

file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the

files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win

XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer

Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also

click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf

folder.

Error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found.

You may need to run setup".

The file that is missing, or corrupt, is one of two. BAR.XSL or

BALLOON.XSL (and/or other files in the same folder), depending on your

search preferences. These files are both normally located in the

Windows\srchasst\mui\0409 folder on your hard drive. These files may be

locally cached in the Temporary Internet Files, so this may explain why

some users have this problem "intermittently".

Error Message: "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot

Be Found" (Q315330)

Windows XP Search Companion Does Not Work Because of File Corruption

(Downloadable Fix)

- Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are

damaged or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot

afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.

Joe: I've tried all of the things you mentioned including the fixes in

the KB articles - none has worked. The registry settings are correct,

the *.xsl files are correctly located, the Common Tasks pane appears

but there is no Search facility and File > Search brings up a blank

panel. I've done the regsvr32 tasks also mentioned - so I'm stumped!!

You might look through this Google Groups search for more suggestions:
