I think better speakers are your only option.

Hi Randy is correct, I assume the sound system is the original on board and probably the usual Realtek one. Control of sound is a hardware thing rather than software so the only way forward would be a PCI or PCIE additional sound card, plus of course a decent speaker system.

If you already have a separate Hi Fi sound system, you can connect to that providing it has a line input stereo socket on it. All you would need would be a lead with the appropriate plugs/sockets on it to obtain much better sound quality at minimum expense.

Hi depends if its a desktop a tenner will buy you a reasonable 5.1 soundcard open the side fit in its slot securely reboot vista will prolly auto install the drivers plug in the speakers and your on your way , if its a laptop and you want to improve ytour sound its either better speakers or a external soundcard hope that helps

If you have onboard Realtek it should be ok for most situations. The upgrade to a cheaper end sound card isn't worth the gains.

You are really looking at a higher end Creative or Asus Xonar card to get great stereo depth and separation. Ebay will turn up some good second hand bargains, but note that alot of the good cards are now PCI-E, alot of boards only have one PCI-E slot that may be taken already by a video card. If you can post your PC spec I'm sure someone can advise your further on what will work.

The Youtube Wiki says that they knock out sound at 44.1KHz AAC stereo so in theory you should get an ok sound. How does Youtube music compare to say MP3 you have stored on your PC? Is it louder, less loud or more or less the same. What I'm getting at wondering if it your whole sound system that is the problem or just Youtube that needs a solution.

1. What is the exact make and model of your computer?

2. Is it a desktop or laptop?

3. What operating system do you have?

4. Does it have a sound card or is it onboard sound?

5. What is the sound chip or card.

6. Exactly what speakers do you have?

Part of it depends on the sound quality that was actually uploaded to Youtube. Some are really good and some are really bad. The really good ones can sound great with a good set of speakers. My speakers are pretty good with a great sub-woofer and my Youtubes sound fantastic if the upload was good.

I'm using a HP desktop running Windows 7.

Onboard sound Realtek driver version 6.0.1.5882 that supports 7.1 speakers.

Logitech surround sound speakers. X-540. About $300 U.S. when I bought them.

I think everyone has great points. But remember nothing can overcome a cheap pair of $20 speakers or a poor quality upload,
