Hi,

I bought a CD-ROM version of Peggle Nights for my wife for Christmas, but when we tried to install it, it wouldn't work properly - the game wouldn't open. We reinstalled it, and had the same results. Somehow yesterday, a whole load of the programs gained the Peggle icon instead of their own, and when I uninstalled Peggle, it seemed to completely screw up the system.

Now, barely any of the programs work properly. Things like iTunes, Spotify and BBC iPlayer, but even Office, Internet explorer and the control panel don't work (a few of them do if I open them from minor, out-of-the-way routes, rather than the main ways). Most worryingly, I can't even install anything or do system restore because it now won't let me.

Generally, when I try to open a program, it'll come up with that box asking what program I want to open it in - the only thing it offers is windows media centre, and now, after a bit of tinkering, Internet Explorer. But even when I try to open IE and select IE from the list, it asks me to run it, and then asks what program I want to open it in!

I've contacted the Peggle manufacturers, but doubt they'll be able to help. Norton says I haven't got a virus. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi bennio.Have you tried System Restore in Safe Mode?

Tapping F8 on startup.

Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

I think your EXE File association is faulty.

May pay to wait for further advice.

You said System Restore wouldn't work in your first post because it wouldn't open. Later you said you did it via the method DSTM suggested in safemode but it made no difference. Is this correct?

Did you restore prior to the game installation? Generally this will fix such issues unless malware was installed alongside the game. I'm unfamiliar with the game but did you buy it retail?

Other things like Control Panel not opening could also indicate malware. Were you ever able to uninstall the game via Programs and Features in the Control Panel instead of just reinstall ?

You got the game for Christmas but you said this started yesterday. It's unclear exactly when you installed the game. Was it yesterday?

To be honest it sounds like your system may be infected with malware in my opinion in spite of your Norton scans.

However more detailed information would help.

I think your EXE File association is faulty.

Try this:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

If your AV program throws up a warning about the program, ignore the warning. Some AV's flag this program because of how it works... that's all.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt ( Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com and should open at the end of the scan)

Note : If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together ( they will both be in the one file ).

Hi, sorry for the delay - I was sure I sent a reply to you, but clearly didn't. The exeHelper from the previous post sorted everything out. Thanks so much to everyone who helped! I really appreciate it.
