Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Re: PA Bear...Re: Cant repair IE 6 Forwarded to WinME General via crosspost. Sounds like WinME was reinstalled without first uninstalling IE6 SP1 when the machine was "refurbished (i.e., /before/ you purchased it). The folks in WinME General newsgroup can help you fix this and get IE6 SP1 installed properly. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Honeysweet wrote: > Hi PA Bear, > Yes, thats what Im saying..in my Start \Programs, I see IE5 and not IE6. > But it wasnt like that when I purchased the machine. > However when I open the browser and look in the Help \ About Internet > Explorer section, it says its > version 6.0. > > Also, I bought this machine refurbished years ago, so there may have been > at > least > one other owner...I know refurbished doesnt always mean previously owned > but > in this case, > it probably was. > > Thanks again! > Tarcia > > "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP@gmail.com> wrote in message > news:Opx26eXuIHA.5892@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> No, that's not what I meant but what you've posted brings up another >> question. >> >> In your reply to my colleague Robert, you said: >> >>> And since you mention the version regression..I dont know why it >>> happened, >>> but I do notice that when I >>> look at the version of my IE, it says 6.0, but on my program list, it >>> says >>> Internet Explorer 5. >> >> Are you saying that in Start | Programs, you see IE5 listed, not IE6? Guest Mike M Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Re: PA Bear...Re: Cant repair IE 6 Re: PA Bear...Re: Cant repair IE 6 Tarcia, If Win Me was reinstalled on a system where IE6 was installed without first uninstalling IE6 the result is a mish mash of versions with parts of IE5.5 and IE6 installed. The following might help you to properly install IE6 (or IE6 SP1) and resolve the problem. Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and Apply). Create a new folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" Locate the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information". Move the contents of this folder to the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" created above. Now try installing IE6 (or better IE6 SP1), re-selecting all components that you want using the Advanced option, even those already bolded, and see if this works. If this works you can now safely delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" and its contents. If not, copy the files back to the "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information" folder and delete the "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" folder. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows mike.maltby@gmail.com PA Bear [MS MVP] <PABearMVP@gmail.com> wrote: > Forwarded to WinME General via crosspost. > > Sounds like WinME was reinstalled without first uninstalling IE6 SP1 > when the machine was "refurbished (i.e., /before/ you purchased it).
