key_man10 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I turned my laptop on today but halfway through start up the screen went blank and the fan started going full speed. I turned it off via the start/stop button and after a few minutes turned it on again. This time there was nothing at all except a fan going full speed. I thought it might be an OS problem so decided to take the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 but then saw there was no light on the CD Rom drive. I opened it manually and tried to boot from the CD but no go. I'm thinking BIOS, possibly dead battery but would appreciate another opinion before I take it to pieces, not as easy as a PC :(. Should mention I have removed and replaced the memory modules, tried a different HDD. There are no beeps from the m/board and trying to enter set up doesn't work. Thanks. Quote
bugsy_ Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Maybe a VGA chip failure or MotherBoard..... maybe. can you post you full system specs for a closer look? KenB Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 This could be M/B died as Bugsy has implied. You say that you have taken the RAM modules out and replaced. Try them one at a time. Try taking the battery out and running on mains adapter only. or Try running on battery only. Get a can of compressed air and give the inside a few blasts through the vents. It could possibly be a build-up of dust. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

What do you mean by a full system spec? I tried a few things last night and now when i switch it on it has a one second burst of starting then nothing. I did all the other things with the memory and battery/mains but to no avail. Quote

key_man10 Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) eg, windows 7 ultimate x64 AMD Athlon II X2 nvidia geforce 9200 etc... be things like make and model of your computer, what graphics card you have, memory, what OS you are running............. does that help any?;) Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6120, Pentium Centrino 1.6 mhz, 512m ram, Windows XP Prof. Graphics card on board. Pretty standard machine. I have also tried a different HDD with a Win 7 OS but this made no difference whatsoever. Edited January 5, 2011 by key_man10 Quote
bugsy_ Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Are you getting any beeps on boot up if so is it 1 or a couple or constant beeping? I think your motherboard is the issue here. Have yo tired KenB suggestions? have you checked nothing as came loose or unclipped from inside, as in cables? make sure all hardware is correctly seated and remove ram and replace it, and make sure everything is free from dust as KenB said. Have you gave a bad knock or have you toch the inside for any reason before this happen, are you sure it hasn't been overheating? key_man10 Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 No beeps, no sound whatsover except a half second sound of a fan. I've taken the thing to pieces since i last posted but it's made no difference. I tried all the things KenB suggested but nothing. I reckon it's time for that laptop docking station in the sky :) Quote
bugsy_ Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 The only thing i can think it could be is the MOBO or PSU Quote "It takes an intelligent fool to make things bigger and more complex...... It takes a touch of genius to move in the opposite direction"
Dalo Harkin Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 The fans running at full speed suggest that either:- The computer is overheating (this is often from dust, use compressed air) The BIOS has reset and needs reconfiguring The CMOS battery is dead Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
key_man10 Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Thanks. I'll see if I can locate the CMOS battery and replace it. Will have to wait until next week now as I'm working until then. :( Quote
