Guest Gis Bun Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 Hi. We are retiring an old server. The server has WINS. With a few exceptions [almost all servers] all the computers are on DHCP. My question is if it's easier to start from scratch or to migrate from one server to the other? If migrating, any procedure (KB?)? Thanks Gis

Guest Gis Bun Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Re: WINS Migration Woops. Server 2003 R2 to Server 2003 R2. And if i started from scratch, wouldn't WINS just rebuild over time? Thanks "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > Hello Gis, > > You didn't specify a windows version, see here: > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875419 > > http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/d3a5ad61-6b33-4ba6-8a25-76d853c48a571033.mspx?mfr=true > > Best regards > > Meinolf Weber > Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers > no rights. > ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups > ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > > > Hi. > > > > We are retiring an old server. You could set up the new WINS server and replicate over to the new WINS server. Then repoint the WINS clients over to the new server and then shutdown the old. > > Thanks > > "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > >> Hello Gis, >> >> You didn't specify a windows version, see here: >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875419 >> >> http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/d3a5ad61-6b33-4ba6-8a25-76d853c48a571033.mspx?mfr=true >> >> Best regards >> >> Meinolf Weber >> Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and >> confers no rights. >> ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups >> ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm >> >>> Hi. >>> >>> We are retiring an old server. If there are none, I guess I'll just ignore the old WINS and move everyone over as is. As almost all are using DHCP addresses, I'll just drop the renewal to a day. So they get switched over fast enough. > > Thanks > > > > "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > > > >> Hello Gis, > >> > >> You didn't specify a windows version, see here: > >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875419 > >> > >> http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/d3a5ad61-6b33-4ba6-8a25-76d853c48a571033.mspx?mfr=true > >> > >> Best regards > >> > >> Meinolf Weber > >> Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and > >> confers no rights. > >> ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups > >> ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > >> > >>> Hi. > >>> > >>> We are retiring an old server.
