What does brand mean - today?

edit: For my response - Id say brand has taken a big hit these days. ie; Why buy CheeseWhiz (6.99) when you can buy "Supermarket Brand" Cheese Spread for $4.99

 

In the old days (eh-heh) brands were valuable- because if they came to your area - they must have already been popular (tested / tried / true)

 

These days - with so many products, and so many people ... is there even such thing as brand anymore?
