Guest JonK Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I created a virtual machine after getting the virtual server installed. I then read some of the best practices and operations manual, getting more confused as I read but plugging along. I moved the .vmc and the .vmd files to a different drive and folder that I had set up as the default search path. I then realized I needed to fix the drive I was using as it was just a FAT32 partition. I copied all to a temp folder and took care of the partioning and formatting of the drive the way I want for now. I made the partition the same drive letter as before and then brought the saved folders back. Now when I try and add back in the virtual machine I already had I can't because it keep saying it already exists. May exist but I can't use it. What am I doing wrong or missing here? Please understand this is all very new and I am trying to make sense of the documentation which really seems to need some help, lots of the links keep looping back to where you started. Thanks greatly in advance for any help. Oh, if there is a more appropriate newsgroup for Virtual Server 2005 questions please let me know. Jon
Guest Bill Grant Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Re: Restore Virtual Machine in Virtual Server 2005 Question Yes there is a newsgroup for virtual server. microsoft.public.virtualserver You cannot create a new virtual machine with the same name as an existing one. It will work if you simply change the name slightly. The original name would have been removed if you had deleted the original vm. Since you only moved it the original name will still be stored in the system, so you cannot use it again. Guest JonK Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Re: Restore Virtual Machine in Virtual Server 2005 Question Hi Bill, Thanks for your answers. I am not sure if I am trying to "create" a new machine so much as just re-connect it. In any case I just can't use the files I already have? I am trying to understand how this works mostly, no great attachment to the files LOL. Thanks agaiin. Guest Bill Grant Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Re: Restore Virtual Machine in Virtual Server 2005 Question The simplest solution would be to delete the .vmc file, then create a new virtual machine with a different name and use the existing .vhd file. If you want to use the same name you need to delete the existing entry and that can be hard to find.
