can not get online

I have a cable connection to my Dell XPS T450 desktop, windows 98se, 450 ram,

Explorer 6.0. My virus scanner ran out

of life while I was in the hospital and rehab., so I deleted it and got Avast. It

worked fine for a couple of days. I think I

pressed a button to have it scan while I was online. This stopped me from going

online because every time I press Explorer it tries to connect to 66.135.200.145

(which is Avast) if I remember correctly. I tried to do a 'clean boot', but I

remember that after I rebooted and pressed ctl alt del ...Explorer wad running, and

in

msconfig 'run=' and 'run=' were running (2 of them). I deleted Avast , but I guess I

should have stopped the Explorer and The 2 run='s because, although I can get

e-mail... I can not run Explorer (6). It just tries to connect to '66.135.200.145'

(it

shows up at the bottom). Can you help me get rid of the line in my registry that is

causing this? Please. I have become disabled and I do everything online. I promise I

will buy a new computer but I need to have one running now. Thank you in advance.

First off , it is very dangerous to delete applications

they must be properly uninstalled !

I'd reinstall Avast if possible as you will need a virus checker.

As to IE, try resetting your home page for starters

Re: can not get online

I changed my home page from E-bay to Optonline.net. The numbers at the bottom changed

to 66.54.17.31. So I was mistaken, I guess as to what the numbers mean, however there

is a icon before the #s that looks like the Avast icon. I still have the downloaded

program in my computer. Should I re-run it to install Avast again? .....and then try

the clean boot uninstall again (stopping Explorer, and the 'run='s?

Re: can not get online

Hi Ginny,

66.135.200.145 has nothing to do with Avast A-V.

66.135.200.145 is eBay:

http://www.who.is/whois-ip/ip-address/66.135.200.145/

http://whois.domaintools.com/ebay.com

http://uptime.pingdom.com/site/month_summary/site_name/www.ebay.com

What happens when you try to go to a site with Internet Explorer? Open the browser,

type http://www.google.com into the address bar in the browser, and press Enter. Do you

get an error message from the browser? "Page Cannot Be Displayed"? What happens?

Page cannot be displayed and similar errors

Can you get online if you do a clean boot and try from there?

Re: can not get online

Explorer is always running in a normal Windows installation....it is the shell. If

you do NOT see Explorer when you press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then your shell has crashed and

there will be no taskbar or desktop icons.....so, you want to see Explorer running.

I don't understand what you see as significant when you are referring to re: "run="

in msconfig. msconfig doesn't show you what is "running"....the Startup tab of

msconfig lists what is set to load at Windows startup. That does not necessarily

mean those programs are continuously running after startup. Please tell us exactly

where you are seeing these two apparently blank "run=" lines. The description

sounds like something in the "run=" lines of the Win.ini file....it should have

nothing to do with your problem getting to web pages.

Re: can not get online

Sorry, I looked in msconfig, then went to the 'startup' tab. The last 2 items (and

the only ones that were left checked) were run= and run=.

On closer inspection they are harmless (hpfsched). They have been there as long as I

have had my computer. My printer is a HP and is running well. What is causing the

problem is the Avast icon in front of the destination #s on the bottom of the screen.

I checked with Comcast and all my settings in Internet Explorer are correct. They

gave me Avast's telephone in Russia!

What I was going to try was to reinstall Avast from the original download icon, do

the clean boot again and this time end task the Explorer from my ctl-alt-del. And

stop the run='s. And then try to uninstall again. But from what you say...that will

probably give me the black screen of death??? At least now I can access everything

that is on my computer to transfer it to a new one. Please tell me... should I not

try to do that?

I cannot click on any links as I can't get online! eBay was my home page but I have

changed it and the Avast icon at the bottom remains but the numbers change to the

site that I change to. I can't get to any of them. Are there any MVP's around. I need

Re: can not get online

I'm an MS-MVP, but it doesn't matter whether an MVP is helping or not....there are

plenty of capable people on this group.

I asked you in my last reply to do some things and post back, but you have not given

the info I requested, so I will ask again, one step at a time:

What happens when you try to go to a site with Internet Explorer? Open the browser,

type http://www.google.com into the address bar in the browser, and press Enter. Do you

get an error message from the browser such as "Page Cannot Be Displayed"? What

happens?

Also, is Avast still installed? You stated you "deleted" it. Did you uninstall it

via Add/Remove Programs, or did you just delete files?

Re: can not get online

Sorry for the delay...just got back from a 3 hour MRI.

Thank you soooo much Glen.......I am back online. You are a genius.

Now I need to buy a new desktop. Should I go with another Dell Dimension? I did a

test ride with a $2000 Apple. They thought they had transferred my files over to the

Apple, but when I looked, more than 1/2 were not copied. Also, I found the operating

system foreign, and I don't want to learn a new one at this point in my life. Will

any PC be able to transfer all my files including mail from my computer? My computer

does not have a rewritable disc. I have a zip drive and floppy.

Any suggestions as to the most trouble free operating system? and suggestions as to

Brand of PC (3 OR 4 gb.). and specs? I do a lot of pictures, write letters, research,

etc. (no gaming). I would like to get music and perhaps movies. Thank you.
