Can't rename files after XP's SP3 update

HELP!!! Is there a fix? I just updated with SP3 for XP Pro and now if I do a

slow double click (select and then click again) to rename a file I just get a

flat "clunk" sound. If I right click, the "rename" option is not there. I

uninstalled the update through add/remove programs. That didn't help, so I

did a system restore. That gave me back the ability to rename files, but I

lost my internet (both wired and wireless). I reversed the restore, got

internet back, but lost "rename" again. I really don't want to reformat since

it was so hard to find the drivers after downgrading from Vista (still

looking for some). Any help is appreciated.

Double click is to open, not rename.

Double-clicking on the file name will open the dialog box to let you

rename the file.

Rick O'Shay,

You would be correct - if the original poster had not been so detailed in

their description...

"slow double click (select and then click again)"

If you open Windows Explorer/My Computer and locate a file you want to

rename and click on it (left/selection button) once to select it (highlight

it) and then - waiting about 1+ second(s) and click on it again

(left/selection button) - you will see that it goes into an 'edit mode' -

where you could change the name of the file.

Re: Can't rename files after XP's SP3 update

That is the "slow, double click" I was talking about. It seems to have

affected anthing on the desktop only. I can rename files in other folders

through my documents or windows explorer, but am unable to rename even a

newly created folder if it is on the desktop. I've also noticed it has taken

the "desktop" folder from my user folder under the C:\Documents and Settings.

All Users and Default User have theirs, but mine is gone. And in its place is

a "my recent documents". It's not a folder, the icon looks like a piece of

paper with a clock. All the files inside cannot be selected and renamed. When

you right-click any of them on the desktop and look at the properties, there

is a new section. Now in the Attributes area is a "Security" section that

reads "this file came from another comuter and might be blocked to help

protect this computer. Then it has an "Unblock" button. But selecting

"Unlock" doesn't seem to do anything. Still can't rename. If I move it into

my documents then a right click or select and click will allow rename, but if

moved back to the desktop, it again becomes locked. Acting much like

Vista-the whole reason I downgraded. I'm thinking the only way to really

remove SP3 effects is to reformat.
