My machine was working fine until this Thursday. I turned it on as usual but it wouild not load Windows. I am not very PC tec minded but reasonable practical. when I turn on the PC it runs through the BIOS screen then displays the options to start window normally - Safe mode - Using the last best known configurations. I have tried all these options but it just recycles through the the same screens again. I have read a number of other similar postings, and tried cleaning the dust, removing and replacing the RAM, using only on RAM chip, but the problem has persisted. Anyone got any ideas, all would be most gratefully recieved.

Hello and welcome...

Firstly have you checked your hard drive is listed on the loading devices screen on startup or have you checked if it is listed in the BIOS?

I pretty sure the hard drive is shown as is the rAM capacity, I have checked the BIOS settings and the hard drive is the shown after the floppy as the boot option. The floppy drive is empty.

Ok i think your looking to Select Repair or Recover from install CD

Type cd system32 when the command prompt appears > Press Enter then type ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old > then press Enter > Type map then press Enter.

Type expand d:\i386\kernel32.dl_ then press Enter If the Windows XP CD is inserted into a drive other than D: replace D: with the proper drive letter.

Type exit and then press Enter key

The computer should shut down and reboot again.

hopefully your issue will be solved, i just done this the other night on a friends pc and it worked just fine. Found here

Hope this helps

Do you have the windows install disk?

I do have the CD and have already put it into the D drive. It seems to load a set of drivers but once this is done I chose the recover option by pressing R. I then only get the option to log onto the the D drive - option 1. Once this is done I am asked for the Administrator password which I have long forgotten. Is all lost?.
