Re: can not get online

I am so sorry. I didn't mean to shout. I have written it so many times I just wanted

it to stand out. I should have underlined it . It just makes me feel that my problem

isn't understood. I apologize profusely. Please forgive me.

Re: can not get online

Re: can not get online

I am not sure how to find the HOSTs file and what to do with it however.

ie6 is the only browser I have now and I do not have a proxy. but I found while

re-booting "Vortex Dos Audio driver 2.0, Interrupt 5, Ports 220-22fh dma3, Joystick

201h". I have no joystick, or Vortex and games have NEVER been played on this

computer.

Re: can not get online

Re: can not get online

Note that version 4.0 has been installed, all attempts to ignore this issue

will likely not achieve the desired results.

She does NOT have:

"MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, AND MSXMLR.DLL."

"fILES THAT i DO have are MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML4.DLL, MSXML4A.DLL,

MSXML4R.DLL."

Helpers need to key upon WHY this was installed; what might have installed

this; was it a failed attempt; and then work to resolve those issues; PRIOR

to further suggestions related to other areas.

( The OS is working and you are online in some ways. )

Working: NNTP, SMTP and (POP3 or MAPI).

Faulty: HTTP using either IE or Firefox.

The HOST file was discussed elsewhere. I don't remember seeing if

Have you connected the computer directly to the /broadband-modem/

if that is a separate piece of hardware?

whatever) doesn't have to be looked up at a domain name server so it can be

reconciled to numbers thus loading the site more quickly; secondly, "bad"

sites can be put into it with the reconciled numbers set to 127.0.0.1 like

this...

127.0.0.1 dclk.net

127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

That number directs your browser to your own computer so any site that has

the 127.0.0.1 will never load.

6. If you have a hosts file you might try renaming it to something like

hosts.old and see if your browser will then work. If not, name the file

back to what it was.

This is, admittedly, a long shot but it can't hurt.

It is true she doesn't quite match up-- but it's crazy to just rename

these files! The error messages would just get worse! Also, it could be

harder to effect a fix! For instance, if ever we get an over-install of

IE6 to run-- it may refuse to update a phony, renamed file because it

I see you also have said...

"The three files that are missing are MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, AND

MSXMLR.DLL.

fILES THAT i DO have are MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML4.DLL,

MSXML4A.DLL,

MSXML4R.DLL. I was wondering if other people had these files and if

someone had put

numbers in the files ie: missing MSXML.DLL......haveMSXML3.DLL."

The three that are missing are definitely IE6 files-- I see them in IE6

cab's using WinZip. Here are all such files I've got...

C:\>dir C:\MSX*.* /a /s /on

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

MSXBDE40 DLL 229,648 06-03-99 12:00a MSXBDE40.DLL

MSXML DLL 495,376 08-17-01 12:00a MSXML.DLL

MSXML3R DLL 44,032 01-07-02 4:30p MSXML3R.DLL

MSXMLA DLL 15,360 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLA.DLL

MSXMLR DLL 26,624 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLR.DLL

7 file(s) 1,957,920 bytes

It looks to me you don't exactly match up!

(1) Are you sure of your version of IE, does it

say IE6 in the About box?

(It looks like you may have some IE7 files--

which certainly do not belong in Win98!)

(2) When you tried IE6Setup.exe, did you check to include only

the items that were not shaded in the components box?

Supposedly, those are the ones you've already got, & you

would not need to go online for a download. (However,

I'm not sure it really works like that.)

(3) Do you have an option to "Restore the previous Windows

configuration"...?...

(a) "START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,

Install/Uninstall tab".

(b) Scroll to...

"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools".

© Click the Add/Remove button.

(d) Bolt "Restore the previous Windows configuration",

& click OK.

If you have that & it works, then try the IE6Setup.exe again to get back

to IE6. Report back.

Here's something to check...

Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using dial-up modem

Internet connection...

1. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab".

2. Select your dial-up connection from the list,

& click on the Settings button.

3. If the option "Use a proxy server for this connection"

is checked-- uncheck it.

4. Note: If you use multiple connections, repeat from

step 2.

If that gets your NET working...

(a) Still we must solve the problem of screwy IE6 .dll's.

(b) We may want to revisit your proxy settings, if you

decide to reinstall avast!

Bingo! Give the man a cigar, or whatever. A firewall that was a 30-day demo

and its time was up. Plus Spybot Tea-Timer, plus a lot of other yuck. All

cleaned up now, Avast! installed, IE working, FF gone, and Ginny can tell

the rest of the story. Now it's a case of testing things out for a while.

FWIW, putting those files back allowed IE Repair to run. I'm thinking she

should still force reinstall, but perhaps not.

Having msXML 4.x parser files installed should be ok, and

/i_thought/ would be inconsequential to the 'not getting online'

issue. I've had it redistributed/installed by various 3rd party

software.

Sure, something is clearly amiss with the the IE6 install,

because of the missing msXML 8.0.x files.

But 'CdLSRN/Ginny' also wrote that: "I have firefox on my desktop

but I can not get anything but "this page can not be displayed"

or a time out when trying to load." So it looked to me as if HTTP

was perhaps stopped at a deeper level aside from the XML-problem

within IE6.

I thought i'd just suggest a few things to rule out, but Firefox

is not on the machine anymore so they can't be tested separate

from IE. I'm still curious about if there is a software firewall

| Having msXML 4.x parser files installed should be ok, and

| /i_thought/ would be inconsequential to the 'not getting online'

| issue. I've had it redistributed/installed by various 3rd party

| software.

Do you remember what programs?

|

| Sure, something is clearly amiss with the the IE6 install,

| because of the missing msXML 8.0.x files.

|

| But 'CdLSRN/Ginny' also wrote that: "I have firefox on my desktop

| but I can not get anything but "this page can not be displayed"

| or a time out when trying to load." So it looked to me as if HTTP

| was perhaps stopped at a deeper level aside from the XML-problem

| within IE6.

|

| I thought i'd just suggest a few things to rule out, but Firefox

| is not on the machine anymore so they can't be tested separate

| from IE. I'm still curious about if there is a software firewall

| present.

Oh I agree there are deeper problems, which could include the firewall,

hosts, and several other [which might have let a hack through if she didn't

get a messed up install of something], but without those files she was going

no-where.. what else is missing or wrong.

But the group went into re-install mode rather than working from the

normal:

Well, what did you try to install recently?

What were you doing when this happened?

Running through file searches and version checks, and other which, unless I

missed it, fell by the way side [though she could have been a bit more

responsive and calm].

But the key seems to be trying to determine HOW she lost those files...

Because the versions can be incompatible [version wise and registry wise]...

and the registry does contain LOTS entries related to these files [version 3

has 140 entries]; and she could have a different MDAC and other files in the

mix as well.

This has already been shown; AVAST and SBS&D both had issues when

installed. My guess she is only beginning to find those problems.

Because I do not have any of these files ending in a "4" I thought

that this might be the needed file that somehow got renamed. I know

windows will often do that to certain files as a means to backup.

Thats why I said to rename and keep track of what was done so it can

be named back to what it was. I still cant understand how these 3

files vanished, yet she has these oddball filenames that dont exist in

a normal installation of IE6.

Remember? I have noted that it was done by:

UPX-iT 1.5.5 from Codeplace

and

Peter's XML Editor 2.0 by Peter Reynolds

( Debugging; I meant IMAP instead of MAPI a few posts back. )

Actually, this computers clock is correct, but i also see my

posts as one hour off. I'm posting this message via

'msnews.microsoft.com' again as a test, to see if it differs from

the one i just made as a followup to MEB.

Oops, had forgot to nym-shift on this account.

Well, that wasn't it. So must be the 'Auto-adjust for summertime'

then. This post will be not adjusted and probably from the

future, and i'll be rechecking that button again after.

Hmm, have to run those through to see what else occurs, thanks. These

produce no issues in 9X then I presume... no, wait, I'll have do that at the

end of this standard test cycle, I may still need this base install for

current issues.

As for the MAPI verses IMAP, we likely read in the proper term mentally,

like those old tests to see how many letters could be left out of a sentence

and still understood or other word games... now that you point it out it

would make a world of difference in a technical journal %:-).

I hope Gary gets her straightened out...

Those were my thoughts in my first response in this thread when I mentioned:

<quote>

You best run a thorough system check with the proper

That thought has never wavered and is deepened after reading that OE out box

may be corrupt.
