| Because I do not have any of these files ending in a "4" I thought

| that this might be the needed file that somehow got renamed. I know

| windows will often do that to certain files as a means to backup.

| Thats why I said to rename and keep track of what was done so it can

| be named back to what it was. I still cant understand how these 3

| files vanished, yet she has these oddball filenames that dont exist in

| a normal installation of IE6.

It is a very bad practice to rename a file to something it is not--

very, very bad! You'll get worse error messages, unpredictable

additional symptoms-- & possible damage to files if a horrible crash

should occur! Also, it will become 2.5 times more difficult to analyze

what really is wrong for each file you rename-- the symptoms won't match

normal ones for the original situation!

Microsoft would far more likely delete an updated file, & the new one

would take the same name as the old. Or, MS might move the old one to a

backup folder (some files end up in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs), but

keeping the same name. If ever it renames an old file-- it wouldn't be

to something that couldn't be mistaken for a live file, such as changing

the last character of its extension to an underline. Thus, ".dll" might

become ".dl_".

I think it's more likely CdLSRN somehow got hold of IE7 files or took

some other update that gave her the ML4's. But IE7 does not belong in

Win98! I don't know... maybe whatever "update" was run deleted the

missing ones too. Here is how she may show definitively what she has...

(1) "START, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"

(2) At the prompt, enter...

DIR C:\MSX*.* /a /s /on

(3) Use the "MARK" button, outline text with mouse, &

the "COPY" button to post it.

Here is what a normal IE6 would show. (Note: One other file did show up

for me, but it was in a different folder & it wasn't in any IE6 .cab.)

C:\>DIR C:\MSX*.* /a /s /on

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

MSXBDE40 DLL 229,648 06-03-99 12:00a MSXBDE40.DLL

MSXML DLL 495,376 08-17-01 12:00a MSXML.DLL

MSXML3 DLL 1,122,304 08-29-02 12:00a MSXML3.DLL

MSXML3A DLL 24,576 01-07-02 4:30p msxml3a.dll

MSXML3R DLL 44,032 01-07-02 4:30p MSXML3R.DLL

MSXMLA DLL 15,360 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLA.DLL

MSXMLR DLL 26,624 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLR.DLL

7 file(s) 1,957,920 bytes

But I'm pleased to see with Terhune's help in another thread CdLSRN's

original problem is solved. Looks like a whole lot of work was done!

I didn't remember how UPX-iT worked, and now i have a freshly

reinstalled Win98SE machine here so i decided to reinstall these

programs since i posted about them.

Win98SE only updated with IE6;

( Both do install the three [msXML4*.*] files when installed as i

wrote earlier. )

'Peter's XML Editor' installs and runs fine.

however

'UPX-iT' while it installs fine on running it, it threw up a message:

WindowTitle: Execution aborted

WindowText: Failed to initialize XML library

WindowButton: [OK]

It might have done that also when i tried it out years ago and at

the time i might have just uninstalled it and moved on.

Now i then installed mDAC, several, ending with (mDAC 2.8 SP0)

but still same error-message. Then i installed the parser and SDK

combo of 'msXML 4.0 SP2', note that the three [msXML4*.*] parser

files were now already on the machine, but for whatever reason it

helped and UPX-iT 1.5.5 works after installing that!

Nop. It wasn't there initially, didn't get installed during the

installs and so it isn't there now.

I DL'ed and saved the UPX-iT 1.5.5 installer but not the web-page

or any other document with it so i can't say what if any

system-requirements was advertised for it at the time (Feb 2004),

nor is there any ReadMe for the GUI-frontend installed with it.

But i can mention that on a WinNT 5.01 machine where the

[msXML4*.dll] parser files wasn't present, nor the SDK part, that

the UPX-iT 1.5.5 installer installed (including the msXML parser

files of course) and then the program worked directly (i always

reboot after any install though) without any error-messages or

further tinkering needed.

Just curious whether unicow was *in the mix*.

It would have been interesting to see where the failure actually occurred,

using something like Dependency Walker, filemon or regmon, or another tool

on the two different systems... but then it was probably a programming issue

anyway..

Like I said, I'll look at that program sometime in the future if I can

locate it at that time..
