I am still struggling with Avast. It is in my Internet Explorer and won't let me go

online. I have installed and deleted it in safe mode several times. I get online for

a short while then it restarts itself and I can only work offline.

Re: need antivirus

Did you download the latest version of AVAST [4.8.1201], AND did you let it

update itself. While updating, depending upon your connection speed [like a

phone line], you may temporarily not be able to load a web page...

Once fully updated, AVAST MAY require you shutdown/restart to finish the

process.

Also, please clarify whether you are attempting to *install and uninstall*

while IN Safe Mode...

Now try reinstalling.

I wouldn't give up on Avast, especially w/ Win98.

Re: need antivirus

Nor would I. That uninstaller does a pretty good cleanup job [though it

still leaves a few files around].

And uninstalling AVAST in Safe Mode [as indicated elsewhere] does not work

all that well {FME}..

Re: need antivirus

I did not have my mail coming through the Avast Virus Scanner, I had continuous

protection and Web protection. I trusted the virus scanner at Cablevision to take

care of my mail. Therefore, as I stated early on, I can not get online via Internet

Explorer. I can not open and get online with any other ie: Mozilla (which is on my

desktop) and I can not click on links.

However, for about five minutes today I was able to get online before it re-appeared

, and I downloaded the Avast remover utility. I used it in safe mode but I am still

in the same condition I was before......I can send and receive e-mails but I can not

get online.

Re: need antivirus

You might try calling up your ISP and see if they will walk you through it,

but the chances are slim with '98. Avast real time scanner has to be set up

manually for Win98 - it is not automatic for IE or FF as it is when running

W2K & XP. If you haven't already, check further on the Avast website, they

used to have an animation on how to do it and it's probably still there. The

last thing I can think of is to try the IE6 repair function in add-remove.

You will lose any IE6 customizations, but on the bright side, IE6 is so

clunky that you can't lose much.

I went to add/remove programs, clicked on 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6SP1 and

Internet Tools'. It said "can not repair Internet Explorer, Please run setup again to

reinstall all components" ...under more info. it said"FileMSXML.DLL" is missing File

MSXMLA.DLL IS missing, and File MSXMLR.DLL IS missing.

Can I get these files through an e-mail (since I can't get online) and if I can

........can you give me specific directions as to how and where to install them?

Thank you. Ginny

Re: need antivirus

See if this helps to repair IE:

Click Start>Run, type the following and click Enter, for IE6x: RUNDLL32

SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance

Choose the Repair option, and continue.

If the repair says it cannot complete, reinstall Internet Explorer over

itself.

The three .dll files that are reported as missing should be in

C:\Windows\System, check to see if they are there.

If you need to reinstall IE, in Explorer expand C:\Program Files.

Click once on Internet Explorer to show the files/folders in the right pane.

If ie6setup.exe is present, double click it to reinstall.

Re: need antivirus

Regardless of the message, just having those files isn't going to fix it.

You need the installation files. You'll either have to go use a public

computer, or get some friend or acquaintance with a computer to download a

copy and burn it to CD, or find someone who can mail you a copy. (Where do

you live?) Or, you can try this link. Maybe it will work.

http://grystmill.com/shared/ie6sp1.zip

The ZIP file is over 47 MB. If I have to email it, I will, but try that link

and/or consider other options first.

But try Brian's methods, first. The program IE6SETUP.EXE needs to download

most of the files, first, and you may or may not be able to do that in your

They go in C:/windows/system

You get them by running IE 6's setup program. When you do that they will

automatically be put in the correct spot.

BTW, I trust you know that you can turn off Avast's "Web Shield" by

selecting "Pause/Stop Provider" after right clicking the Avast icon in your

system tray. Doubt it will do you any good as I don't think Avast is the

cause of your problem.

If it has to go online to download the files, It won't work. Should I even try? Do

you have these files? My computer has a cd/dvd rom only, Can I install them from your

cd? If yes I will send you my address. I am in Yorktown Heights, New York. I am

housebound/disabled and can not get out to the library. Thank you. Ginny

I did start, run, and typed "RUNDLLEWSETUPWBV.DLL" WITHOUT quotes and got a message

could not find......dll or one of its components. etc. I put in the same thing with

the ,IE6Maintenance" and got a message " can not fine". I put in the 1st one with a

space between RUNDLL32 AND SETUP AND it did't even bother to give me any answer nor

did it go anywhere.

Re: need antivirus

I can't hurt to try the link I gave you. If that doesn't work, I'll email it

to you. You must understand, you ARE online. It's just that your Internet

Explorer browser is broken. IE is only one tool that uses the internet. Your

OE can send and receive, and I'm quessing most other tools that use the

internet -- except browsers, apparently -- will also function on the

machine. Understand: When you say that two different browsers failed to get

online, it suggests that maybe IE Repair or forced reinstallation may not

fix the problem. It still needs to be done, but it may not fix the problem.

I can guess what happened in general terms, but I would have to be sitting

in front of your machine in order to trace the trail. I'm hoping that the

cleanup tool will be the one that saves the day.

I don't know if using that download link requires IE to function properly,

and even so, since IE is broken in part, the download functions may still

work. So give the link a try. It definitely can't hurt anything.

As a last resort, or just because you want them, I have a two-CD set of

updates for Windows 98/98SE and ME. The first one is a CD put out by

Microsoft in Feb 2004 that updates the system to that point in time,

including IE6SP1. The second CD includes all those updates that are offered

at Windows Updates after installing the Feb 2004 package. This makes it

possible to take a fresh installation of Win98/98SE/ME to fully patched

without going online. I ask $3 to cover costs (CDs, packaging and postage.)

You have uninstalled Avast, correct? Safe Mode is often not the best place

to install/uninstall apps. (However, there are exceptions, like the Avast

cleanup tool.) Instead, you should consider these procedures:

http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm.

(Ignore the reference to another article on Security. I have to get off my

butt and update that article, but for now it's too obsolete with regard to

recommended applications, so I killed it.)

I forget... Were you able to obtain the Avast uninstaller tool?

http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Instructions:

"Sometimes it´s not possible to uninstall avast! the standard way - using

the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can use our

uninstallation utility aswClear."

--How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe:

1. Download aswClear.exe on to your desktop

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode

3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility

4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse

for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be

deleted!)

5. Click REMOVE

6. Restart your computer

Re: need antivirus

Brian's command got wrapped. It needs to look EXACTLY like this, including

whether upper or loser case (parts of it, anyway.). There is only one space,

after RUNDLL32. What you should do is simply Copy/Paste the line into the

Run box.

RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance

Re: need antivirus

I went toC:/Program Files, Internet Explorer and clicked on IE6SETUP.EXE. after

waiting a while I did a ctl alt dlt and it said "ie6setup.exe not

responding"........I am guessing that is because it tried to download some updated

files but for what ever reason...it doesn't work. I tried it twice.
