SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

This issue has spanned four threads, now, and we'll try to wrap it up in the

thread "IE Running well so far". However, it boils down to there was a

thirty-day trial firewall installed, so we got rid of it. But the REAL issue

is that for Avast! Web Shield to function, it needs to have port 12080 open.

This is from Avast! Support:

> You should allow web shield avast! provider to access internet in your

firewall settings.

>

> You can remove existing rules for avast in your firewall, then start avast

update (or restart Windows to trigger auto-update check). When firewall

asks, allow avast.setup access to internet and create the rule again. If

your firewall has option that allowed program changes often, set it too.

>

> For the correct operation the Web Shield process (ashWebSv.exe or

aswWebSv.exe)

> needs a permission to access the Internet (TCP port 80) and a permission

to act as a server and accept incoming

> connections from localhost (the local machine) on TCP port 12080.

There are still outstanding questions, and she'll be running more formal

scans for malware, HJT, etc.

For the ZA; Overview>Preferences>General_options: check the proxy setting

and use localhost and port 12080. For MSIE; Internet Options>connections>Lan

Settings> same basic choices as ZA. Next you need to put the loopback

adapter in the Trusted zone of ZA; FW>Zones: use IP address as the ADD

option and name it localhost with IP 127.0.0.1 and assign it as Trusted.

The Avast webshield should begin scanning and logging.

* I not certain that the ZA setting is as necessary as MSIE, but seems to be

a good idea to let ZA know that this is working like a "Transparent Proxy"

server.

What ZA? There is no ZA. In any case, the issue has been dealt with in

another thread in so far as IE is concerned. The real question is whether to

use WebShield at all.

I neglected to add to the previous post that we have a "wrap-up" thread

going named "IE running well so far". The lady also just started a new

thread with a request for help in choosing and using a new firewall, "Which

firewall is best for Win98SE". Perhaps you could add something there?

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

The standard shield is most important. The webshield is add protection and

may be redundant. The logging on the standard shield exceeds the webshield.

The webshield acts like a "transparent proxy server"or application level FW

for Avast database only. I do not know if it needs server rights or not.

Most programs do not. I have no program alerts with these settings and ZA

set such that webshield has access rights only.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

As noted, the problem was solved. And if we want to enable WebShield, Brian

A. has provided the support pages that explain how to do it in Windows 98

(different from later versions.) Not sure WHICH one of these threads it's

in, but perhaps you could find those messages. Brian didn't contribute TOO

much to the threads, so it should be easy to find them.

All I know is that I installed Avast! on a relatively new install of 98,

didn't have to change the firewall settings in my router (don't have any

other firewall), didn't have to do any of the things suggested in the

articles cited by Brian, and it is causing no problems. Never HAVE had to

disable the WebShield, that I can recall, and I've not only been using it

for at least a few years, but have installed it on numerous machines with

WebShield enabled (including several '9x machines) and had no problems.

Which just goes to show you that it ain't all that simple.

You didn't set the WebShield HTTP proxy...?...

I've implemented that, as it seemed to improve avast!'s performance

(Although, STILL it didn't appear to be as perfect as McAfee was,

which reported a visus for all 8 of the bogus viruses there when

after download before an alarm would sound-- not simply clicked

for download. )

So...

(a) Click the avast! icon in the tray.

(b) Select Web Shield in the Installed Providers box.

What shows for Scanned Count, & does it increase for each site you

visit? Also...

(d) Basic tab-- ensure both items are checked.

(e) Web Scanning tab-- ensure Scan All Files is bolted.

(f) Advanced tab-- Check Show Detailed Info on

Performed Action

Now, do you see a TON of HTTP's & TIFs getting scanned in pop-up

windows at the bottom of your screen for each site you visit?

One thing about that HTTP Proxy...

On the one occasion I temporarily uninstalled an earlier sub-version of

avast!, the setting was not automatically undone. That makes sense,

since it was manually implemented in the first place on this Win98

machine-- but one must remember to undo it manually (I guess), in the

event one wants to uninstall avast! for good. If not undone, I'm

thinking the NET won't work!

OK, so Web Shield doesn't work on Win98 without the proxy. Didn't know that.

Well, IMO, that ain't worth it. It can just sit there and do nothing so long

as it stays out of the way. What I don't get is that it causes Ginny

problems, even with no firewall installed on Windows (just the Belkin

router.) Unless maybe I've undone enough now that it WILL just sit there and

do nothing. I can't get her to test it, <g>.

Yes you can. I just changed those proxy settings , but the Web button has disappear

in Avast. Did we remove it in some way? (finished my other project).

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus-

I have it installed and have the proxy settings set. Only had a problem with one

site, in that it had a lot of x's instead of pictures but

when I right clicked and said show picture (which is a pita) the picture came up!

Better than before we made all these changes. EBay is the place I would have expected

all the x's but it's fine. But I think what you are saying is don't try the test.

I remember there is a place on my Belkin setup site to put in proxy settings. Let me

know if I should do that. For now unless I have problems.....I will leave the web

shield on. Ginny

| know that.

That appears to be so. Athough it appears to involve sites only -- the

stuff that begins "http:" & probably "https:" & possibly others -- there

could be multiples involved when clicking a single URL. I can see 4

http:'s flash by in pop-ups when I click that avast! URL I posted

earlier-- & the Scanned Count increased from 17 to 22!

TIFs STILL were scanned (seen in pop-ups) as they entered, even with Web

Shield paused. Scanned Count did not increased for them.

| Well, IMO, that ain't worth it.

Well, it DOES seem to improve virus detection at that Eicar site, as I

said. Checking again (& this is a bit different from first

remembered)...

With Web Shield PAUSED... none of the 8 clicked at Eicar sound an alarm.

The download box is offered instead, & the download is allowed. The

downloaded file has to be R-Clkd & scanned or clicked to run or open for

avast! to detect a virus.

With Web Shield RESUMED... the all 4 HTTP viruses get detected as soon

as they are clicked at the site. The download box is not offererd. All 4

HTTPS viruses behaved as with WS paused.

Now, I see (Web Shield on or off), the HTTPS eicar.com.txt file will

open when clicked. Even downloaded, it also will open when clicked. For

a virus to be detected-- it must be R-Clkd & explicitly scanned! SO...

avast! isn't perfect! (The HTTP text file will get detected when clicked

at the site-- usually! If it stops detecting that one, clear TIFs of all

things Eicar. Sheesh.)

For all of that, it didn't seem to matter whether On-Access Scan was set

to Normal or to High.

| It can just sit there and

| do nothing so long as it stays out of the way. What I don't get is

| that it causes Ginny problems, even with no firewall installed on

| Windows (just the Belkin router.) Unless maybe I've undone enough now

| that it WILL just sit there and do nothing. I can't get her to test

| it, <g>.

I see she's done a bit of testing but had a crash. I'll try to figure

it, if I can.

I wouldn't necessarily give up on the avast! proxy yet.

(a) Was it working until you set something in Belkin?

(b) Can you remember anything more about the fatal exception,

like did it mention any programs?

© Did you ever have one like that before setting avast!'s proxy?

To get a bit more diagnostic info about such crashes...

"START button, Run, DRWATSON";

now, D-Clk it's button in the Tray.

What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste it's contents,

using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the Tray. It sits

waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into the Diagnosis tab.

(a) "START button, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe".

(Should be in "C:\Windows".)

(b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop (Create shortcut)".

© R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".

(d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp"

(e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".

Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a crash or a D-Clk.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus-

IMO, considering the condition of the lady's machine at this time and the

imperative that she remain connected to the internet, and lastly that there

are still other more important tasks that need to be performed on the

machine ASAP, I'd leave well enough alone. Maybe come back to it later. The

Standard Shield is the important one. That, along with the passive

protections already in place and the system is sufficiently protected for

the moment.
