Well, (turn on DrWatson now, but) best finish up with Terhune in all

threads first, I think-- I'd rather he battle with MEB than me! He isn't

quite as mellow as he had once become anymore! After that, as I posted

elsewhere...

I wouldn't necessarily give up on the avast! proxy yet.

(a) Was it working until you set something in Belkin?

(b) Can you remember anything more about the fatal exception,

like did it mention any programs & what was the last thing

you clicked before it happened?

© Did you ever have one like that before setting avast!'s proxy?

To get a bit more diagnostic info about such crashes...

"START button, Run, DRWATSON";

now, D-Clk it's button in the Tray.

What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste it's contents,

using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the Tray. It sits

waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into the Diagnosis tab.

(a) "START button, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe".

(Should be in "C:\Windows".)

(b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop (Create shortcut)".

© R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".

(d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp"

(e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".

Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a crash or a D-Clk.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I did not set anything in Belkin. Perhaps I should have gone to my site and entered

the Proxy settings for Avast.

I believe it was a fatal exception OD... but I didn't stay there long. I was afraid I

had lost my machine. Sorry. As you can see I ran Dr. Watson.and posted the

results......saved a copy to the desktop and closed it.

Yes I had fatal exceptions OD a few years ago (or more) caused me no end of

trouble. Either caused by McAfee or one of my other troublesome firewalls. CA was the

first trouble free firewall that I can remember. Sorry, don't remember the last

thing I clicked before the crash. I am going to set up Dr. Watson now . Then I will

set up the proxy and the web scanner. I will look for Brians links for windows 98 and

Avast Web Shield. Should I put the proxy settings in to Belkin? Ginny

Avast not working:: need antivirus

Avast not working:: need antivirus

Perhaps it needs Quick Time to run. Ha Ha. When I tried to set up web shield or just

open Avast it gave me several different error messages. "Program cannot load

storage", The process cannot load, etc. Unless I hear from someone I will remove it

and try a reinstall. Could Dr. Watson have interfered with it? Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Don't takeout the KB!~ it is protection from a problem that came from the

very same region as Avast.

You only need to set the router with proxy rights iff you have a proxy

server in your LAN. This works like a proxyserver in that it is enabled the

same way. The shield should work for you if you just set it in your

msie>internet options>connection tab>enable proxyserver and label/address as

localhost and port:12080. You also must place in Trusted zone; loopback

adapter as 127.0.0.1 and router iff you have a software FW like ZoneAlarm.

Else Do nothing. Try that setup and dr watson is not a bad idea if your

suffering crashes, but this should not crash you on windows.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

>Should I put the proxy settings in to Belkin? Ginny

NO on any router. Leave it blank like the default setting.

Only set the msie settings.

Only set software FW settings for Trusted zones if required by the soft FW.

ELSE DO nothing.

Try that setup.

As Jim has said, absolutely the 2 "KB" entries are fine. I tend to think

the Adobe Type Manager entry can remain as well. But this one...

--------------------

<unknown> has altered Windows system files.

Module Name: <unknown>

--------------------

....needs to be investigated! It could be innocent, but anyway I wouldn't

want one there myself. (I dimly recall once I did have it, but it isn't

there now. Could be it came/went with some in/uninstall I did-- maybe

NetZero's NET-search thing?) Anyway, I'm looking at Google for some

ideas, but that is a difficult one to figure. In the meantime, maybe

post your Startup Group...

(a) "START button, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup

Programs".

(b) Use the Edit menu to select all, copy, & then post it.

But, STILL, it may be a good idea to finish up with Terhune before

investigating this-- for my safety & yours! I think he's almost done

arguing with MEB!

CdLSRN wrote:

| I did not set anything in Belkin.

For Belkin, as Terhune has been saying, if it objects to avast!'s

doings, you must tell it to allow. However, I use Kerio Personal

Firewall & do not know Belkin at all. In Kerio, it is very easy to do!

| Perhaps I should have gone to my

| site and entered the Proxy settings for Avast.

What site? Do you mean something to do with your ISP (Internet Service

Provider)? I tend to agree with Jim to do it ONLY where that URL I

posted said using the IE requestor. It's a little different depending on

whether you use a LAN or not-- but that is described at the URL. If you

crash again, DrWatson may trap it & provide a clue. What is your avast!

version? R-Clk avast! in Tray, About avast!, scroll to top of About

window-- does it say Build 4.8.1201?

But really you should get a signed release from Terhune before we do

this!

| I believe it was a fatal exception OD... but I didn't stay there

| long. I was afraid I had lost my machine. Sorry. As you can see I

| ran Dr. Watson.and posted the results......saved a copy to the

| desktop and closed it.

Get DrWatson into your Startup Group as I posted earlier. Then, it will

sit in your Tray ready to grab info the next time you crash. Post the

Diagnosis tab at that time. As for the one you've already posted, I've

answered elsewhere. It isn't horribly bad, but I want to investigate

that <unknown>.

| Yes I had fatal exceptions OD a few years

| ago (or more) caused me no end of

| trouble. Either caused by McAfee or one of my other troublesome

| firewalls.

Alright. Never mind that. If you hadn't been getting them recently, it

could be the new setting attempts. Lets see what DrWatson may say.

| CA was the first trouble free firewall that I can

| remember. Sorry, don't remember the last thing I clicked before the

| crash. I am going to set up Dr. Watson now . Then I will set up the

| proxy and the web scanner.

Very good!

| I will look for Brians links for windows

| 98 and Avast Web Shield. Should I put the proxy settings in to

| Belkin? Ginny

As Jim said (& I tend to agree)-- put the proxy settings ONLY where that

URL says. Belkin must be set to allow avast! to use the NET, though, if

it should complain. But I don't know how to do that.

Also you said...

| Perhaps it needs Quick Time to run. Ha Ha. When I tried to set up

| web shield or just open Avast it gave me several different error

| messages. "Program cannot load storage", The process cannot load,

| etc. Unless I hear from someone I will remove it and try a reinstall.

| Could Dr. Watson have interfered with it? Ginny

It won't be DrWatson, as Jim said. An un/reinstall of avast! seems in

order. BUT-- are you running out of hard drive space again, as Terhune

one discovered you were?

"START button, Run, MSInfo32"

Use the Edit menu to post the System Information window contents.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Have a party. Thanks to Gary (and everyone who contributed, of course), I NOW HAVE

3.4 GB of FREE SPACE without losing anything but duplicates. I can download my

Pictures and movies without Quick Time! I have a software firewall and a virus

scanner, and no crashes. I am a happy girl! Ginny

| Perhaps I should have gone to my

> | site and entered the Proxy settings for Avast.

PCR asked what site:

Answer: My old but dependable Belkin Router has a site I have to go to in order to

set it up. They also have a phone number I can use forever to get advice without

paying. It is a very simple hardware firewall, not a NAT.....but I remember there is

a place to put in Proxy settings if I am not going to use Cable's settings. But for

now I think I will leave everything alone. But if you like I will run another Dr.

Watson & post it, now that we have done all this work on the computer. Ginny

It's not a site, it's the routers web based configuration. I don't believe

there is any proxy setting needed at all in the routers configuration, if

anything you may need to forward the port that Avast uses in order to allow it

through.

What is the exact make/model of the router?

Belkin is not a software firewall, it's a router and any changes are done in

the web based configuration.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I'm not quite sure where you want me to respond but here I am. As far as Dr. Watson:

--------------------

<unknown> has altered Windows system files.

Module Name: <unknown>

--------------------

That entry has been in Dr. Watson, as I recall for years. Nothing new.

I ran registry checker and it said "No errors found".

Thank you for telling me how to do a system restore. My question is, why didn't

someone tell me that when I couldn't get online? Wouldn't that have solved my

problem? Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

If all is well with Avast then you do not need to reconfigure anything in the

routers configuration for Avast. However I read in one of your posts that it

wasn't NAT, if you have NAT disabled you need to enable it as that router has

NAT. Also, if you have not changed the default username/password for the web

based configuration, your asking any hacker to have at the router as they wish

at their will. Both NAT and un/pw should not be overlooked if you wish for

security.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Well no wonder it has been such a good firewall. I asked the first person I talked to

from Belkin (when I was setting it up) from India I believe, if it was a NAT router.

He said he never heard of NAT. So I assumed it wasn't. My firewall with Belkin is set

up completely. Thanks for the advice. Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I just went to the Belkin SetUp Site. It is completely different than it used to

be!!! I changed my password. They now say they have a NAT firewall and have many

settings that were not there before. However, my firewall has been enabled all along.

Thank you for alerting me to these changes. Since this is a Nat ,4 port hardware

firewall, is there reason for me to buy a new router with the new XP computer I am

going to buy? This router only cost me around $50. The new fancy ones are much more

expensive. I will be wireless so I guess I need a wireless router? Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

If you plan to go wireless you'll need a wireless router, otherwise keep what

you have. Even if you go wireless you can still use the second router as a

switch behind the main router which then provides additional ports if you ever

need them. Keep in mind that a wireless router/network takes a bit more than a

wired one to secure, do your homework.

What system restore? There is no System Restore in Windows 98. Unless you

make full system backups using a third-party app, the closest you can get

with Win98 is to restore a Registry Backup. That would not have gotten you

back online. Your old firewall was what kept you offline.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Without Web Shield. I had a hard time opening it last night to run a scan. "An

attempt was made to load, ...." when I close that out. the splash screen is frozen

there and I have to do a ctl alt dlt to 'end task' , then the scanner is ther with a

simple interface. I can not close it with the x. Again I have to run a ctl-alt-dlt.

to end task. So I guess it is not running as smoothly as I thought.
