I don't recall suggesting a system restore or even a registry restore to

you for this specific problem. It could come in handy in the future. You

should get something that does a full system backup. Nothing very useful

for that comes with Win98. I use...

http://www.bootitng.com/ 's BootIt NG, has a variety of backup

capabilities & works with all OS: Copy partition(s) to HDD, or Image to

HDD or to CD or DVD. Create, move, shrink or expand partitions without

data loss. Multi-boot too. To install & use beyond 30 days, $34.95.

...., but there are alternatives that others use & like.

As far as that <unknown> in your DrWatson report (yep, this was where to

respond for that), I wouldn't want to have it, but frankly I did live

with one for a while I think. It may go away on its own some day when

you uninstall some package or program. As long as it is not mentioned in

a crash report, probably you can live with it. Keep DrWatson in the Tray

for that report on your next crash.

One way to research it is to boot to Safe Mode (the Startup Group won't

start in Safe Mode) or to use "START, Run, MSConfig" to turn off the

Startup Group & boot to Normal Mode. If it drops out of that DrWatson

Diagnosis window, then it is something in the Startup Group doing it.

Then, you turn half of them back on, reboot, & see whether it's

returned-- & so on. But it may not really be worth all this trouble,

since you've had it forever without incident. OK-- glad all else seems

to be just fine. Maybe post your Starup Group, as I suggested somewhere

in this thread, for a quick examination.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I see where you posted your Startup Group. It will take some study for

me to decipher. In the meantime-- absolutely clicking avast! should not

do the things you say. You must go to Add/Remove Programs & uninstall

it...

(a) "START button, Find, F/F, SetupEng"

That is the avast! raw download. How many do you have?

Delete all but the latest, going by Modification date.

(b) "START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs"

© Double-Click avast! Anti-virus in the list.

Avast! Antivirus Setup will open.

(d) Click the Update Components icon.

Is the version showing... 4.8.1201?

(e) Click the Uninstall button, & do the uninstall.

(f) If the version was less than mine, delete your remaining

SetupEng.exe to avoid confusing & save disk space--

& go download the new one...

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

(g) Click your latest SetupEng.exe to do the install.

Now, can you click around in avast! & not crash? If so, we may proceed

with the settings. Let's try the proxy again...

http://www.avast.com/eng/webshield_issues.html#idt_6869

Since you have a LAN, do the one that involves the LAN only.

.......Quote instructions when LAN is involved...................

Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using broadband and/or

local area network (LAN) Internet connection

1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. Select Tools ® Internet Options... from the main menu.

3. Switch to page Connections.

4. Click on the LAN Settings... button.

5. Check the option Use a proxy server for your LAN

6. Write localhost into the Address field (alternatively, you can

enter IP address 127.0.0.1, which is the same as localhost).

7. Enter 12080 into the Port field.

8. Confirm with OK button.

........EOQ instructions when LAN is involved......................

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

<BG> The lady has plenty of practice uninstalling and installing Avast!,

PCR! With lots of expert help. Besides, if she has an older version, it can

easily be updated using the taskbar icon's menu. I still use setupeng from

1/27/07. In fact, I *think* it automatically updates during install but I

can't be sure. Anyway, there are two update choices in the menu, for the

engine and for the defs.

As for using the proxy, seems to me that doing so already caused problems

for Ginny, but I can't recall for sure. Still, IMO, if an app needs a proxy

it should deal with it during Setup. Otherwise, it definitely won't get

UNdealt with during an uninstall, and that eventuality might cause all kinds

of grief. WebShield's a secondary layer of idiot-proofing, er, defense,

anyway. Besides, the lady seems to be a safe surfer.

| My Startup group:

Well, this site...

http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/

....seems to be fairly excellent! Copy/pste each of your startup programs

into there to know what they do & whether they might be safely removed.

Get back with any further questions. I did the first two...

| Microsoft Office Startup Group "C:\Program Files\Microsoft

| Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b -l

That comes in with Microsoft Office Suite to improve performance. You

don't have the OSA9.EXE that is a virus, because yours is in the right

folder it should be in. The site is recommending it be removed, anyhow,

for being a resource hog. It does have this note, though...

Note - if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an

office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

If you want to remove it, look in Office Suites various menus to see

whether it has an option to turn that feature off. Otherwise, you would

uncheck that item at "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab"-- but Terhune

is against doing it there!

| run Win.ini hpfsched

That one is showing up in your DrWatson report. The site says it's just

reminding you to clean your printer cartridges. To remove it...

(a) "START button, Run, Win.ini"

(b) Remove "hpfsched" from the "run=",

so that it is now just... run=

Doing so "might" get rid of that <unknown>-- IIRC from something glee

said long ago!

| SSBkgdUpdate Registry (Machine Run) "c:\Program Files\Common

| Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot

Look uup-- SSBkgdupdate.exe. That is, copy/paste it into the requestor

at that site. Report back, if you can't figure what to do.

| OpwareSE4 Registry (Machine Run) "c:\Program

| Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE4.0\OpwareSE4.exe"

Look up-- OpwareSE4.exe.

| ashMaiSv Registry (Machine Run)

| C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\AVAST4\ashmaisv.exe

That is one of the avast! startups & will be replaced when you do that

un/re-install. It will be necessary to keep this one.

| POINTER Registry (Machine Run) point32.exe

Look up-- point32.exe.

| Change Lines Registry (Machine Run) C:\chngline.exe

Look up-- chngline.exe.

| LoadPowerProfile Registry (Machine Run) Rundll32.exe

| powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

That one you must keep. It is a normal MS program that loads & exits

quickly during boot.

| ScanRegistry Registry (Machine Run) c:\windows\scanregw.exe /autorun

| SystemTray Registry (Machine Run) SysTray.Exe

That one too must be kept. It does your Registry backup at boot.

| StillImageMonitor Registry (Machine Run) C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE

Look up-- STIMON.EXE.

| SmcService Registry (Machine Run) C:\PROGRA~1\SYGATE\SPF\SMC.EXE

| -startgui

| mdac_runonce Registry (Machine Run)

| C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe

Look up-- runonce.exe. It actually is an MS program-- don't delete the

program! Yours SHOULD be deactivated from the Startup Group, though,

going by that site. Uncheck it in MSConfig, if you can find no other

way.

| avast! Registry (Machine Service) C:\Program Files\Alwil

| Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe

That also is avast!.

| HP Port Resolver Registry (Machine

| Service) $SYSTEM\hpbpro.exe

Look up-- hpbpro.exe.

| HP Status Server

| Registry (Machine Service) $SYSTEM\hpboid.exe

| winmodem Registry (Machine Service) WINMODEM.101\wmexe.exe

Look up-- wmexe.exe.

| KB918547 Registry (Machine Service)

| C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB918547\KB918547.EXE KB891711

That is an MS critical update. Keep.

| Registry (Machine

| Service) c:\windows\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

Same here-- keep this critical update. Only Bill in Co. has permission

I would want to try just once more (because it improves the Eicar

malfunctioning at the proxy setting for that reason.

I have to go now, will get back tomorrow.

I'm sorry, didn't want to interrupt, they are helping [too many cooks

thing]. Just was wondering what your actual physical memory size was and how

much was free, glad though, that you now have some free hard drive space..

They will likely pickup later today.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I am still working on it. I got sidetracked with growing files that Apple left in my

computer.

Also, I configured a Dell with XP and the only high end machine they would let me

put XP on was the XPS 630. Thank goodness I found out how MASSIVE that tower is. 22"

long, 19" high, and 8" wide. I cancelled the order. So until I get around to getting

another, I better get this one in better shape and pare down to release more disc

space. Gin

That's really a miraculous recovery of space, considering Terhune said

you started with only a few 100 MBs! I see you are staggled in getting

your XP-irradiated machine & do want to continue fixing this one up in

the meantime. Absolutely, keep at it at that site. It should serve you

well with XP as well. Report back with any questions.

Oops. I was a little sloppy & hasty thinking hpfsched was in your

DrWatson report & was responsible for the <unknown> in DrWatson. Since

it didn't get rid of it (& even if it had-- we don't know that <unknown>

is actually harming you), it's up to you whether to put hpfsched back

into Win.ini. How good is your memory on cleaning printer cartridges &

stuff?

The thing in your DrWatson that may or may not be responsible for the

<unknown> is ATMSYS.DRV. Here is how to deactivate it...

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

No "System Restore" wasn't mentioned. What was mentioned was that the registry backs

itself up every few days and that if I booted into Safe Mode and pressed option #5 (I

was then given the words I should type in) and then I would be given my choice of a

few dates I could back up to. (I printed it out somewhere and it is in the string

somewhere). I believe it is not in words but a link I was given. Because at the top

of the printed page it said "untitled", I don't remember who sent it. I didn't

follow those instructions.

And, it was my mistake in thinking these instructions would have restored my

computer to the way it was back on that date. I just thought if that date was before

I put the Avast in, that the problem would have disappeared.

I don't know why anyone would fight over it. So, kiss and make up! Ginny

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

I found the printed papers. They are titled "Restore to a previous date.txt" , a bit

of a misleading title if that isn't what it does. It says : "Windows 98 comes with a

utility called Registry Checker that backs up the registry each time you turn your

computer on , and scans your Registry at every restart. If Registry Checker finds a

problem with your Registry, it will automatically replace it with your most recent

backup copy.

To run the Registry Checker at any time:

Click the Start button. Point to Programs, Accessories and point to system Tools

Click System Information

Click Tools from the menu bar and then click Registry Checker." run the Registry

Checker at any time: etc. etc.

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Re: SOLVED(?)Re: need antivirus

Note that there are only five Registry backups, so be careful making new

ones. Might end up with five copies of your currently bad Registry and none

to restore.

With all the frantic back and forth, it's difficult to say for sure what

went wrong with the Avast! installation, but it was probably a combination

of one or both firewalls and the WebShield. Problem was, there was other

confusions that sidetracked us from focusing on the primary issues. I'm also

not convinced that the problem(s) included messes left over by previous

installers, specifically installers from ISPs. (Which should NEVER be

installed!!! Well, almost never.)
