Hi all

Now I have an option to choose either 2 X 2k3 or 2 X 2k8, one for DC and one

for Exchange 07. I have never got hands on 2k8 and I am willing to learn too.

With 2k3 I am comfortable with this.

Currently we have 1x 2k3 AD DC.

So please tell me what would you pick? and why?

One more question: at the moment we have Lock out GPO in place and set in

Domain and apply to every users including Administrator (me), we can't

exclude the administrator in Wins 2k3 server, but I have been told that it

can be done in Wins 2k8. Can we still exclude the adminstrator from Lockout

GPO in mix environment 2k3 and 2k8?

Many thanks in advance

Don't forget that 2k8 does allow downgrade rights. You could purchase 2k8

and use 2k3 instead until you're ready (trained, tested, etc) for 2k8.

See these two links:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/downgrade-rights.aspx

and

under the "Other" section, questions 3 & 4)

Re: 2003 or 2008 server

Hello vdz,

I would install 2008, because it is new and has the longest available support

in the moment. It is also stable and you have lot of new features included,

that you do not have with 2003, except you buy additional license for R2

feature pack, FSRM is one example.

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/0e0d96cd-935b-48d0-b5ba-c70a979fadbc1033.mspx

For learning you can install additional 2008 DC and check out with a test

machine and special OU's only for testing 2008 options on it. Because of

coexistence of 2003 DC's and 2008 DC's some options are not available, becasue

of the Forest functional level and Domain functional level.

To use Fine grained password policy, what you are talking about, you need

a FFL/DFL as 2008 server, so no 2003 DC's are allowed.

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/056a73ef-5c9e-44d7-acc1-4f0bade6cd751033.mspx?mfr=true

And as Thomas mentioned, you can buy 2008 server and downgrade/obtain the

same version of 2003 for use until you are ready for 2008 administration.

Best regards

Re: 2003 or 2008 server

Thank you all for your help.

However I am worried about the CALs, currently we have 50 CALs, should I

have to purchase another set of 50 CALs for Wins server 2008.

Thanks a lot again

Yes. Server 2008 requires new CALs. But your reseller should come up

with a upgrade plan that fits your needs.

cheers,
