Hello,

I know a little about computers, but when it comes to updating hardware (graphics card) for gaming, I am clueless.

I am going to college and want to know if it is possible for me to upgrade my laptop, and what it would involve (graphcis card, processor, etc).

I mostly play shooters.

Any help in identifying my graphics card slot, and telling me what would be compatible would be appreciated. This includes information such as how much power can my processor handle, and if an upgrade is reasonable, and what kind of difference it would make.

Thanks

For the most part, upgrading laptop CPU's and video cards is a no no. Some people will tell you that it is 'possible' and it can be, BUT to find the right components, be sure they won't damage your board and be sure any heat control systems will function correctly is very difficult.

What you would need to do is take your laptop apart and find the board part number - that will allow you to Google it and find out what is possible, or just ring Dell tech support, they may help. Also have a look to see if there is a socket to fit a video card, and then look at other models in the range to find out what cards are fitted, and source one from ebay or similar. Same goes for the CPU. You also need to check the BIOS will take higher speed CPU's.

All said, I wouldn't do it to a computer of that range, if I needed more speed I would sell it and buy a higher spec model.

I agree it is far more 'cost effective' to buy a higher end laptop than it is to try and change the components
