LisaP Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I am trying to sort a pc out that i lent to my niece, it come back with viruses and spyware which i have successfully removed (checked with many scans etc). The main problem seems to be that 9/10 windows that i open freeze and i get the "not responding" message. I keep getting a message about not enough memory but its hardly got anything on it. I have noticed in device manager that RAID controller is disabled, could this be the problem? Thanks for any help. lisa The pc is a 220 Emachines (thats all i can find) running windows xp antivirus: Avast free edition & Spybot Quote

LisaP Posted November 26, 2007 Author Posted November 26, 2007 Hi, thanks for replying. Still having probs but not been online due to Virgin cutting us off by mistake! Right.........it says 96 MB RAM Virtual memory is set to 246 I have done countless virus scans including the one you suggested and its clean. Also run Adaware and spybot and both clean. In MSCONFIG i noticed that the viruses that were successfully removed are listed in the start up list but ARE disabled. These are not pick up by scans now, but thought i'd mention it. Also pc seems fine when its been on for a good while. At start up its a good hour before i can acces any folders, internet etc. Any help is very much appreciated. Lisa Quote
hardware_dave Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Forget the raid controler. 96MB is not enough for xp. You need 512 or more with all xp service packs loaded. I bet the hard disk light is on solid for 30 mins as the poor thing tries to boot. Get a memory upgrade and you should be ok.
