Have a look in the BIOS, there may be a page called H/W Monitor or Hardware Monitor, if there is, look at the bottom for CPU fan speed settings.

If you can't find any BIOS settings to control the fan, and you use software to do the job, I think you will find that the more you wind down the fan speed, the higher the temp will be.

You've cleaned the heatsink/fan and reseated it to the CPU so in theory it doesn't get any better with that setup.

I guess it is not the fan speed that bothers you, just the noise, and the upshift/downshift of the fan speed, which is pretty regular.

I go back to what I said in post 2, PB fans do get noisy, especially from that era, the bearings seem to dry up and they whine. Even replacing with a bog standard CPU fan for a fiver will make a significant difference :)

Thanks Synapse

Have been into the BIOS a number of times and i can't see any sign of controls with regard to the fan. Just a note that the fan speed is flying along at around 4000rpm.

Still, although i couldn't get Dalo's Temp tools to run and that turns out to be that those tools don't work with Pentium D's - while searching for fan tools came across a page of tools from http://www.softsea.com that appear to cover just about everything including fan speed monitor and temperature of all drives and processors!

Or to be precise!

Hi guys

Been to busy to sign in recently but needless to say have never managed to find a page within the bios to control the fan - i guess that is down to PB leaving the door shut.

Whatever, i have used several different temperature readers and they always seem to detect a temperature of around 58 degrees from kick off to close-down, and yet that retched fan still cycles up and down the gears.

So the mystery continues :0((

Cheers for all your help & ideas.

Regards Pozzouk.

I don't think there is a mystery.........

CPU temp is just fine, the cycling fan is normal, that is what they do. In your case the fan is noisy because the bearings are worn so you can hear it change speed.

In a past life I was a PC engineer, and at that time Packard Bell PC's similar to yours were really common. Callouts to PB's were often to non booting systems, certain model mainboards failed after about 2 years use, AND noisy fans....... They are a big fan if I remember correctly, and heatsink/fan replacement always cured the fault, whereas a clean and reseat of the heatsink very rarely did.

I don't understand why you don't swap it for what is costs, but there you go....

If the temp is consistently around 58 degrees no its not excessively hot, but the fan should not be speeding up and shutting down it should be at one stage constantly.

I would either replace the cooler as suggested (it is the cheapest and easiest option)

failing that your looking at a water cooled system :)

Cheers Guys - Success!!!

I really did have trouble accepting that the fan was making the noise even though i have changed many a noisy one in the past.

But having installed an "Artic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2" I now have virtual silence!!! In fact, on a number of occasions have nearly switched off at the mains not realizing that the system was still running! - I just wish i had done what i was told sooner........Sorry Synapse ;o))

Still, on a positive note i did end up with several free system monitors on the way to sorting things out - star of those has to be Speedfan 4.42

So as Dalo suggests, i am now water cooled and runnig at around 48 degrees and a speed of around 1400 revs

So Thanx again - I have been helped.
