heatheraki Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi...if there's anyone out there that can help with this problem, it'd be really grateful. :) I have checked all leads and all cables are plugged in correctly. If I press the start up button the three lights at the bottom of the computer (power, battery and drive light indicators) flash but nothing happens. There's not even the sound of the fan starting up. The computer has just ran out of its warranty (20 days ago..typical1)..so i can't get any technical help from the company. The computer is a Compaq Presario CQ61 Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 I am not a hardware expert but it seems to be a Power supply problem. If it were anything else like the CPU you would get more than a momentary flash of the indicator lights. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
KenB Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi, I am assuming that this is a laptop ?? There is very little that you can try without taking the thing apart. 1. Try taking the battery out and running on just the mains power supply. 2. Disconnct the mains power supply and run on just the battery. 3. Locate the RAM modules. They will be underneath a cover on the base of the machine. Take them out. There will be a small spring on either side that you will need to pull away a little to release the module. Switch on with the RAM out. Do you get the same result? If different - put just one module back and try again. Swap the modules over if necessary. ======================== If not a laptop ... Switch off at the wall ( leave the plug in ) Take the side panel off. Touch the bare metal to discharge static. Remove the RAM as directed above. BeeCeeBee Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 The reference to cables threw me Ken, you are right it is a laptop. (thanks google!) Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
heatheraki Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 Thank you both for trying to help me to sort the problem out with my laptop. I tried to see if it would work with and without the battery but had no luck. A friend of ours brought around another adapter and that seems to have done the trick. So you were spot on, it was to do with the power supply. Thanks again for your help...it's really appreciated Quote
