XP Home boot failure

A friend had a badly infected computer - Dell Inspiron 5160.

After running AVG and Spybot S&D and removing the nasties, it will not

boot.

STOP: c0000135 {Unable to locate component}......baseidn32 was not

found.

I asked him if he had a recovery/restore/installation disk but he

maintains that all he received was disks with Works, Cyberlink, Sonic

etc.

I seem to remember reading some posts that stated an OEM repair disk was

not always shipped nowadays.

Have searched but the solution always involves the use of said repair

disk.

Any ideas?

Most PCs now come with a System Recovery partition on the hard drive.

When the computer boots, it will tell you what F key to use.

Will it boot into Safe Mode? If so, run Regedit and look search for

"baseidn32". It might be shown like this, or similar:

Shell: Explorer.exe baseidn32

You edit it to read Shell: Explorer.exe

...and the machine should start.

Inserting a BartPe CD might allow you to run Regedit and make the change

too.

Haven't tried this, it's just a thought..

Still had the error message on boot up.

Did some further searching and found you needed to hit Ctrl+F11 to get

restore option.

Worked fine and am now setting it up from scratch.

Thanks to all for your help.

You might want to create a restore disk while you're at it :-) Hard

drives don't last forever.
