os image and backup program?

ok its taken me a long time to install all of my programs and get my xp how i want it.

 

does anyone know of a good program that will let me copy my whole operating system disk onto a usb hdd. then if the time comes where the operating system becomes corrupted i can use the backup program to boot into itself and restore the operating system from the usb hdd copy?

I can recommend both Acronis and Norton's Ghost as I have used them for years. Both have saved me on several occasions - I wouldn't be without either of them on my computers. One is as good as the other, they are not free, but worth every cent.
