recommendation for usb hard drive

I'm looking at getting a usb hard drive. I'm looking at Iomega,

Western Digital, or Seagate. Does anyone know whats best? I'd like to

get a 500gig drive.

WD MyBook drives are not known for their reliability. some of them in

the manuals state that the wall adapters must be plugged directly in a

wall plug, not in a power strip.

 

50% of the 13 reviewers of the $250 Seagate 1TB drive gave it a thumbs-

up. 2 reviewers said it was slow (specifically on eSATA: 4MB/sec).

speed issues went away once the drive was ripped out of the cage and

put in the machine. marketed as silent (does this mean "fanless?")

and reviewer said it got hot over long use. another said it was worth

the expense. sigfinicatly more reliable than the WD MyBook.

IOmega: their products (except for zip) don't have enough oomph for

me. the biggest they have is a 360GB.

I generally hedge towards WD.

I see the comment about mybook, but I'm talking about bare drives for

internal use that I will also put into a external cabinet I have.

 

I guess it sounds like you get lemons no matter where you go. :-)

 

The warranty comment holds a lot of punch. Some have 3 years, but

double check with the vendor. I saw a newegg review on a drive where

newegg said 3 years, and the vendor only gave 1. So go to the vendor

to make sure.

Like Philo said, get the one with the best guarantee.

 

I've been using a WD 500 gig USB drive for close to a year. I'm pretty happy

with it over all but every once in a while it "goes away". I have to stop

and restart it for it to come back. I'm not completely sure if it's the

drive's fault or the way WinXP handles USB however.

Like I said, do YOUR research and you will come to the same conclusion I

did. It is not in writing. If it were, would you believe it? Look at

respectable PC manufacturers. Using disks with high failure rates costs them

money. So they use HDs

with high reliability. What disk manufacturer had high failure rates a while

back? I could go on and on but you wouldn't believe it anyway ------THUS, I

say, do your own research.

What supporting sites do you have in mind? Advertisers????????

BTW... I'm not in the market for a new drive so I have no need to do

any research. I have four internals and one external.

 

Two are Seagates, the other three (including the external) are WDs.

WD had high failure rates a few years back. Consumer Reports reports on PC's

but not components.

The manufacturers won't give you MTBF figures so you have to do your own

research.

Know many people with old reliable computers?? What HD's are in them?

Recently found a desktop USB Maxtor with a WD HD. 500 meg, $149 on

sale for $89. Watch the electronic store adds as prices will vary

considerably.

 

Made an image of my HD using TI v11. Also backed up some specific

folders that change frequently with fresh info. I have not had the

Maxtor unit long enough to make a meaningful recommendation.

I have been using LaCie USB drives for a while. They are well packaged,

reliable and fast. Prices vary quite a bit from store to store, I got a

500GB one for about $130 (Canadian).

I have an Iomega 500GB external USB hard drive which work fine, is

relatively quiet and has had good reviews - one of the reasons I got it. I

use Seagate drives internal to my PC and they have worked well too. One

reviewer on the Iomega said that he took one apart once to see what was

inside it and found an Seagate drive in there anyway.

 

It would seem a reasonable bet, therefore. Either Iomega or Seagate then,

would be my recommendation from what has been said by myself and others in

this thread.
