want to burn looong lecture on CD...

Hello everyone,

I downloaded lecture from the library and would like to burn it on CD. However, its 5.30 h chunk, which doesn’t have any pauses:confused:. I have 80 min CDs, and think that it will be good to burn it on 5 CDs, 70 min each. I don’t know or have any special programs to do that, and my computer abilities are good, but not brilliant:rolleyes:. I am looking for the easiest and fastest way.

The first thing you need to do is find out the size of the file and not the length of the lecture. Locate the file and right click on it. Select properties and tell us what it says about the size of the file. Do you have a CD/DVD writable drive or is it only CD?

I have a DVD R/WR, which indicates to me that it is CD writable. The lecture itself is MP3 format and it is 115 MB (120,821,125 bytes). I have both blank CDs (52X speed, 700 MB + 80 min 2x-52x compatible premium) and blank DVDs (4 high speed DVD-R recordable DVDs at 16x120 min /4.7 GB). I want to burn the lecture on CDs, as I intend to listen to the lecture in my car and as it is standard car CD, knowing how old the model is, I am almost sure it will not read it will DVDs.

BeeCeeBee asked exactly the right question as usual. And you supplied exactly the right information.

 

You probably have a dvd/cd combo R/WR which will burn CD's. 115MB will fit easily on a CD which is what you need to play it on a card CD player.

 

You will need to burn it has an MP3 file which is normally associated with music files or an audio CD. Something like Nero, Roxio or CyberLink will do it. You probably already have the software.

 

If you want to play it in a CD player use a CD-R disk. Also slow down your burn speed as many CD players can't read it if it is burned at too high of a speed.

 

I have a Beetles audio CD that is that long and it works just fine as long as you do as I have suggested.

Thank you very much, I have installed Nero, but I have two problems:

1. I don’t see an option to slow down the burn speed when I go to “Create a Judebox CD” (as it will not allow me to create Audio CD or Audiobook CD).

2. I don’t have any pauses during the lecture and I am not sure how to insert such pauses (so I can easily find where I have stopped the CD, when I listen to it).

Hi Yockie, if you want to be able to break that sound track into sections for easier management, there is a free sound editing program available called Audacity, that will do all you need.

Once installed, you will need to then download and install the "Lame" codec to work with MP3, but no worries as Audacity explains where to get it, and how to install.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried audacity, but I cannot seem to be able to download the lame codec. I tried to follow the instructions given on http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3 but when I try and go on to the lame webpage (http://lame.buanzo.com.ar) it will not open and hence I cannot download it, thus I am still unable to create tracks on audacity.

Hi all,

I have finally managed to download the lame codes. I have also been able to cut the audio into 10 minute slots. Buy now another problem has arisen. For some unknown to me reason when I use Audacity, the lecture shrinks from 5 and ½ hours to just over 2 and ¾ hours. Thus when I export the 10 minute slots I get the "chipmunk" effect – i.e. it sounds as if chipmunks are reading the lecture out, rather than a person. Do you know how I can fix this problem?

I know very little about audacity or that kind of software but it seems that you have compressed the audio to the point of distortion.

 

A standard CD has a large enough capacity to handle the lecture as is with or without breaks. I did find this bit of software Free MP3 Splitter,MP3 Joiner,MP3 split,MP3 Cutter,MP3 trim software ! I know nothing about it except that it appears to be a cnet download and the site carries no warnings.

I would use the create an Audio CD as opposed to a jukebox CD

then you just search for the file, add it to the burn list and then call it what you like, select the optical drive and then hit the burn button and it will spit the CD out when completed

BeeCeeBee, thank you very much for the great program. I did download it and it worked wonders. It is easy to use and does not take that long. I separated the whole lecture into the 10 minute slots I wanted. Then I selected the audio CD option on Nero and burned it on 5 separate CDs (I did try the Jukebox option, but it did not work in the car). It says the Free MP3 splitter program is only a trial and the full version costs $9.99, but I cannot see ANYWHERE how long the trail period is – 30 days, 60 days, 90 days – who knows? LOL.

Dalo Harkin, thank you for the suggestion, but I cannot see the “select the optical drive” option. So, really, I couldn’t do what you suggested, but thanks for telling me about this option anyway.

Glad you got it sorted, the select optical device is only applicable if you have more than one device installed capable of burning :)
