Guest Three Lefts Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I just noticed some odd sorting behavior by Windows Explorer. When sorted by name, Explorer lists these folders in this order: 00 0A 01 A0 A1 AA Why is [0A] between [00] and [01]? The 0's are all numeric zeroes, not the letter "O". I pasted these into Word and they sort as I would expect: 00 01 0A A0 A1 AA I did a little more experimenting. Explorer sorts the following folders in this order: 1A 02 2A 03 3A 04 4A 05 5A 06 6A 07 7A 08 8A 10 11 12 13 What is going on here?

(r-h column) Correct the Sort Order in Windows XP http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm -- Joe =o)
Guest Bill in Co. Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Re: Explorer sorts funny Well, if you remove the leading zeroes, you'll see the pattern. This "Numerals in folder and file names are sorted according to their numeric value" sorting order was seemingly changed in WinXP and Vista to be considered "more natural" (more human-like). You can change it back to the other regular way (used previously) by the MS registry tweak. See MS Article Number 319827.
