Help with bootup/password problem please

My Win XP Home computer will not boot. It comes up to a window asking for a

password. Bottom line is there is no password. Any effort to get past this

results in 'Unable to log you on because of an account restriction'. I was

trying to get around the Welcome Window that started coming up after the

last Auto Update and read on one of MS's Forums to uncheck Require User

Password in Manage Passwords. Anyway, I obviously messed it up. Thanks for

any help, PJ

The date and time was 5/25/2008 8:22 PM, and on a whim, pepper pounded

out on the keyboard:

Hi Pepper,

You can try this:

Click Start, Run, type:

control userpasswords 2

and click OK

Click once on the account you want to use

Uncheck "Users must enter a user...", and click OK

Report back,

You write "Bottom line is there is no password." This is actually

incorrect. There is always a password, even if it is a blank password.

No exeptions. You could try this to get back in again:

- Reboot the machine.

- Press F8 repeatedly during the early boot phase.

- Select Safe Mode when prompted.

- Log on as Administrator. You may have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del

twice is succession to be allowed to enter your user name.

- Use a blank password or else use the password that you

(or your dealer) chose when first loading Windows.

- Click Start / Run / cmd {Enter}

- Type this command:

net user pepper SomePassword

where "pepper" is your normal logon account and "SomePassword"

is your new password.

Thanks for the two suggestions I received. On a fluke I tried typing my

user name in instead of the default 'Administrator' and it let me in. I

guess I don't know the difference. When I double click on User Accounts in

Control Panel it shows that I have two accounts. One is Administrator and

the other is Guest? Thanks again PJ
