I run windows xp home edition on my Hewlett Packard which is about 5-6 years old. I recently started getting error messages regarding my MCafee anti-virus, which is 2005 version so i decided to un-install it and upgrade to another AV. This was unsuccessful and immediately started receieving more error messages with the phrase SPORDER.dll in the message, i have tried all i can think of to remove it including system restore but to no avail and it now stops me from logging onto the net as well.

I tried downloading Anti-Spyware programmes on my works PC, copied them to a Memory stick and uploaded onto my home PC, i had hoped they would install automatically and i could then run them, this was not the case. Is it possible to do this, if so can anyone forward the process i need to use to do this? Any advice and help would be great. Thanks

It sounds like your system has had a malware attack, most likely something that has either hijacked McAfee or jumped in when you uninstalled it. Either way, the most important thing to do is backup your data now. Your important documents and files: make sure you have a backup. Then test the backup on another machine.

 

Now, the best way to get rid of a malware infection is to start your computer in Safe Mode and use every tool you can to get rid of the infection. Google for Ad-Aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy and Windows Defender. Download, install and update each of them. Then perform a full system scan and quarantine/remove everything they find.

 

If that doesn't get rid of the infection, your only real option is to perform a clean reinstallation. But of course, make a backup first of your important files and data. Windows and the applications can always be reinstalled.

Another thing you can try is go to "TREND MICRO Housecall 6.5". I find that site will find just about anything that doesn't belong. It may take awhile to do a scan, depending on your system. On mine it takes about an hour. But its worth the wait.
