Hi All!

I have purchased a second hand GPU (cant afford a new one at present) but having installed it my PC wont boot up. Could this be a compatibility issue?

I have an old HP Pavillion w5261

HP Pavilion w5200 Desktop PC series- HP Pavilion w5261.uk Desktop PC Product Specifications - c00553944 - HP Business Support Center

and wanted to upgrade the GPU to play my simulators with the graphics options turned up a bit.

I have got a second hand ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB which when I installed the PC would not boot up. The PC starts with all fans running and lights on the PC and GPU light up but it doesnt go any further than that. If I put the old card back in it works fine!

Any suggestions or help or should I just give up now?

Many Thanks

Dan

Also, I have already upgraded to a 750W PSU

Hello and welcome.

I am not sure of the problem yet.

But have you connected all cables correctly internaly and have you checked you have not loostened any cables?

It says on your HP link the PCI slot x 16 is not available...But I asume this is due to the origonal old GPU being in that slot...

Have you tried powering off and using the BIOS reset jumper or removal of the BIOS battery for 1 minute, relpace and reboot?

Hi! The GPU is fully seated in PCI slot with the 6PCI-E power cable plugged in and it will not boot. Replace it with old GPU starts straight away? So no other loose cables.

You are correct about X16 PCI slot not being avail as this was being used for original GPU.

I have tried several times to start the PC, with original GPU in, the fans come on at high speed for a sec or two then as it boots to BIOS selection screen they calm down and PC boots. With new GPU the fans say running at high speed and nothing else happens.

I have not tried anything within the BIOS/rest jumper or battery as I am unfamiliar with that side of things, although could try t if I knew what I was looking for/doing?

Ay help would be greatfully received!

Ok,turn off the computer.Remove from power outlet.

Touch your PSU for a few seconds to help eliminate static.

Open up the tower and locate a large battery on the mainboard that looks like a digital watch battery only it is a bit bigger than a penny.

It should have two small clips holding it in place...

Remove the battery for one minute then replace.

Resart the computer.

If above dont work....

Could you test the card in another computer?

If no there would be a few smaller computer shops who would test this card for you...

Also after following Jelly Bean' advice, most GPUs have more than one VGA/DVI connection on the back, make sure that you are using the one on the left (if you are looking at the PC from the back)
