Hi.

I am using a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC, using Windows XP (Windows Vista Capable).

 

I think I may have a virus and am in urgent need of help.

 

When I switch my pc on, it comes up with a message:

 

This application has failed to start because msls52.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

 

I click OK and it comes up again, and then again.

 

Then it just takes me through, to a blank blue screen with no desktop.

Hello there.

Can you do the following steps:Our Security guy will then check the results and give you further help.

Step 1

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

• Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  
• It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  
• Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  
• Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
  

Step 2

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  
• Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    

  [*]Then click Finish.

  [*]MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

  [*]On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    
  • Then click on the Scan button.
    

  [*]If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.

  [*]The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.

  [*]When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".

  [*]Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

  [*]Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.

  [*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

  [*]When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)

  [*]The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

  [*]Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

 

 

Step 3

• Download OTL to your desktop.
  if you have problems, try this download link:

• Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  
• When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  
• Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check

• right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

• Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  
• When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  
• Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply.

Thanks for replying. I can't get to a desktop, all I have is a blank blue screen.

 

Is there a way I can get to my desktop, or some activity so I can download what you have suggested?

Can you restart the machine and then repeatedly tap the F8 key on startup.....

 

A list will come up and choose last known good config,see if that choice gets you into windows.

 

 

If not restart again,F8 again and choose safemode with networking...

When using safe mode it is very slow and can take a few minutes to kick in.....

 

Do you remember what the blue screen error said or was it just a blue screen?

 

Do you have the recovery disk or install disk for your machine?

 

Can you restart the machine and on the black screen you will see at the bottom written:To enter set up press ?......Or press ? to enter setup...

 

The question mark maybe the Del key,F1 or F2 key...It will say on the screen wich to press.

 

Once in BIOS locate were it says load defaults or set defaults in BIOS.

 

This usaly will be press a certain key on your keyboard....

 

Press the key then press F10 key to save the default settings.You may get a pop up box that says Y/N type y and hit enter on your keyboard the machine should restart...

 

I know it sounds a little off putting going into the BIOS but once you are in there and read the screen its not so hard....

 

Did you have any slowness,or issues with the computer before this happened?

 

Or any hardware problems such as the CD/DVD drive?

I chose safe mode with networking, and pressed enter.

 

The first message i got was:

then I got the following message:

then it took me through to my password screen. I entered my password and pressed OK.

 

Then another message appeared:

I then go to a black screen with Safe Mode written in each corner of the screen and at the top it says:

it stays on this screen and does nothing else - I have given it 10 minutes now, and still nothing.

 

Any further help, would be very greatly appreciated.

Hi,

been into BIOS and changed to default settings, and same thing has happened.

Same messages appear again as I have typed in my previous mails.

I don't have a recovery disc.

I have burnt OTL onto a disc and tried to boot the Laptop using the disc, but that didn't work either.

I believe it is a virus, as my husband had somebody access his bank account and do a transfer. And I did all my online banking on the infected laptop.

Sarah, on your start up screen is your hard drive listed?

 

Or in BIOS did you see it listed?

 

Do not worry I PMed a security guy to pop on and check your thread and see what he can do for you...

I actualy think this fix is you need a recovery disk or full install XP disk to run a repair install....

Or a recovery partition or set of recovery disks, when it gets to this stage a complete wipe is best...

 

you can actually press CTRL, ALT and DELETE and use the RUN option in task manager to get into msconfig and such, but its a wasted effort- format is best

What do you actually mean by 'Windows Vista Capable'?

Are you running just XP or a dual boot?

Did you run any security scans (anti virus, anti malware programs) just before this happened?

 

I don't have a recovery disc.

If running XP, do you have the recovery console installed?

It should flash up as an option just before the OS tries to load?

No it won't work.

Otl is not a bootable program.

But there is a bootable version we could try if you don't have the recovery console installed.

So you do get the boot options come up when you use the f8 method?

Do you get an option..... Last Known Good Configuration?

if so, click on that and see what happens.

 

These types of problems are not always easy to rectify, so i'm trying to get as much info as i can to see which options are open to us.

 

You obviously have access to another system if we need to burn a boot cd?

Hi, tried all the above jellybean, and nothing works.

 

I get the boot option when i press f8, and have tried to use last known good config, but this didn't work either.

 

I am working from another laptop at the moment, so can burn discs if needed.

HP changed the way that the recovery process was handled on their systems.

How old is the system?

was it before 2006 or after?

I can't remember exactly but I believe that I may have bought the PC in 2006 or 2007, is there anyway, I can find out from the computer itself?

Try restarting the computer and pressing F11 repeatedly before the Windows load screen appears.

See if you get the recovery window comes up.

 

Running this option will reset everything back to factory defaults, meaning you will lose any data stored on the system.

Have tried pressing F11 repeatedly, but nothing happens, it carries on loading Windows.

Let it boot to windows normally and when you get to the desktop/blank blue screen and nothing comes up

press CTRL, ALT, DEL

 

Does it bring up the task manager box?

If Task Manager doesn't work, you can follow the instructions below.

Let's see if we can make a bootable disc and run OTL.

 

Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

 

Using the good system:

• Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  
• Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  
• Double click OTLPEStd.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  
• Reboot your bad system using the boot CD you just created.

.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here

• As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
  .
   
  
• Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
  
• Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  
• Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  
• Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  
• When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  
• When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  
• Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  
• OTL should now start.
  
• Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  
• When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  
• Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  
• Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  
• Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  
• You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  
• Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

But try F8 first if that dont work then restart and try F10.

 

Possibly F12 depends on age of computer.

 

 

However this link says to press and hold down F11 on startup...Not repeatedly tap it...Also sometimes it may take a few attempts for this to work....
