missladysarah Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 F8 or F10. But try F8 first if that dont work then restart and try F10. Possibly F12 depends on age of computer. However this link says to press and hold down F11 on startup...Not repeatedly tap it...Also sometimes it may take a few attempts for this to work.... How to Boot an HP Recovery Partition | eHow.com Hi Jellybean, In response to the above, pressing f8 takes me to the screen where i can start in safe mode etc, but as mentioned previously, this doesn't work. f10, takes me to the bios setup but nothing changes here. and holding f11 as told by ehow, doesn't work either. and neither does holding down f12. so, i'm going to wait for a reply on what to do if i go to task manager. many thanks. sarah Quote

Starbuck Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Once in the Task Manager, make sure you are on the "Processes" tab and then click on "File" in the Task Manager menu. Then select "New Task (Run...)" and type explorer.exe in the "open" field. Then click ok. Does your desktop come back? Quote Member of:UNITE
missladysarah Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 Hi Yer Starbuck, Really am appreciating all your help here. I haven't tried the task manager bit that you recently posted, as I thought I would go ahead with the bootable disc. I am following your instructions, and am currently in OTLPE, and have pressed Run Scan. It has run for quite some time (about 20 mins), and at the bottom it says Scanning Users StartMenu, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Do you think that it is doing something and I should just leave it, if so, how long do you suggest I leave it for, before I realise that it's not really doing anything, Lol !!! Thanks Sarah. Quote
Starbuck Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Just let it run for awhile. Using that sort of software is a lot slower than normal windows. Quote Member of:UNITE
Starbuck Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Btw: if you want to backup any files etc from your system, you can do it whilst this new system is running. Just add them to a usb stick as you normally would. Best to be safe than sorry. Quote Member of:UNITE
missladysarah Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 Will do Starbuck, thanks again for all your help. It is still stuck in the same screen, not seeming to be doing much, but it the meantime, I will transfer all the files I need onto my USB stick. Regards, Sarah. Quote
missladysarah Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 Hi starbuck, Waited 4 hours in the end, and then went to task manager and noticed that OTLPE was not responding. Any suggestions ? Regards, Sarah Quote
Starbuck Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Let's try a fresh scan then: Restart OTL When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output. Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner. Let me know how this goes. Quote Member of:UNITE
