windows installer

Hi,

I running windows xp pro, w/sp2. I'm not sure when it happened, but i seem

to have lost windows installer. I received the following error (which seemed

pretty standard for everything wrong with the installer).."windows Installer

Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in

Safe Mode (which I wasn't), or if the Windows Installer is not correctly

installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance". I got the error

when I tried to remove (ABBYY) it, part of the (OCR) software I received with

my lexmark all in one, using the add/remove programs button in the control

panel. I tried the uninstall function in the lexmark software and it only

removed the software pertaining to the printer.

I've tried the instructions (I felt comfortable with) I found in the

knowledgebase, but they didn't work. Unless I receive some pretty specific

instructions, I don't feel comfortable making changes to the registry (I saw

quite a few suggestions to make changes to the registry)

Can anyone help, or direct me in the right direction? (if you provide

instructions, please consider me a half step up from a novice). Thanks
