XP - SP3: How can I NEVER install same?

Hey all...

tried now 4 times to install SP3 and every single time, my box freezes up;

used the AutoUpdates twice now and finally d/l the full 300MB+ app and tried

that twice. All goes well until the installer gets to the Installing

Processes part, and then the box freezes.

So I wont install same. BUT...how can I turn off that single item when

AutoUpdates runs, as I continue to get the nag notice about it and I don't

want same!

???

Not enough information...

You have some version of Windows XP installed on some sort of computer with

likely some applications installed and you are trying to installed Windows

XP SP3 onto this computer...

Have you read through the following links (and/or use the last one to get

support from Microsoft - it's free for SP3 issues through April 2009)?

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation

http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3

http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:

"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of

Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall

Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta

version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP

SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,

uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:

"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center

Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To

avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If

this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows

XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing

SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair

installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for

that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

installation

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

Workarounds:

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool

that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing

[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.

2. After booting into Safe Mode:

Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)

sc config intelppm start= disabled

--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Change your settings to notifiy you or go in and start windows update

manually. Do custom update. In the list find the update you don't

want and uncheck it. There is a box below to remember and don't ask again.

If you want to get it back later, you simply 'show hidden updates' on

the left.

You can only temporarily block it from Automatic Update or Windows Update.

Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool Kit

Re: XP - SP3: How can I NEVER install same?

Or one can do it manually by changing the registry key as follows:

1] Find this key:

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

2] Create a new DWORD value named DoNotAllowSP and set it to 1 (To disable the SP install), or 0 (To allow the

SP install)

This should be permanent I guess.

The registry change may be permanent but it only keeps Windows Update at bay for

a limited time. Read the tech article regarding the time limits.

Also be advised that this doesn't prevent installation via a CD/DVD, or from the

stand-alone download package. This simply prevents the service pack from being

delivered via Windows Update for a limited time.

Re: XP - SP3: How can I NEVER install same?

to save your typing, I've done it on a few PC's.

copy/paste the info between the === into 'new txt document' ,

- save as 'XPnosp3.reg' and then double-click XPnosp3.reg

========================================

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

"DoNotAllowSP"=dword:00000001
