If I remember correctly, Gary got you setup fairly well. If you need another

SpyWare package, some could be suggested I'm sure.

Wow, maybe we should first establish whether you are the old [poster not

age] Angel.

The first thing is to determine what is presently installed to work from...

What's installed?

Anti-Virus

Other SpyWare/Malware Protection

Firewall

Any mail protection programs

Something not addressed above?

AND has AdAware been finding any SpyWare/Malware installations previously

[not cookies]?

MEB,

Yes, I am the (authentic Angel) or as you say, "the old poster". I have just

been away for a while because of an auto accident on January 6th, 2008, hit

by a car. Long story!! Just getting back to using the old computer.

I have the old Spybot 1.4, Avast and the old version of AdAware 1.06rl.

I am using a 2Wire from ATT.

All the AdAware found are cookies.

BTW, ATT has raised their rates for Internet by $5.

Re: New AdAware (free)

Hello:

Ad-Aware 1.06r definitions can still be downloaded manually from the

Lavasoft web page:

http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ or click on:

http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip .)

Look in the upper right hand corner and clock the link for Ad-Aware SE and

download it

directly into the main program install folder for Ad-Aware SE and unzip it.

There was also a batch file utility that was written to help streamline this

process.

See the post below by David H. Lipman:

(Note that download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip should be

changed

to: http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip .)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The latest Ad-aware definitions are at the URL;

http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip

You can then download; wget.exe http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget/

and; unzip.exe - http://patriot.net/~bmcgin/unzip.exe

Place; unzip.exe, wget.exe and the DLL files in the Windows directory

[ %windir%; c:\windows ]

Then you can use a batch file such as...

Update.BAT

------------------

@echo off

wget -N http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip

copy defs.ref defs.bak

unzip -j -o defs.zip

Save the BAT file in the folder where Ad-Aware.exe is located and then

create a link

(LNK) file on the DeskTop that points to the BAT file for a manual update.

You could also create a scheduled MS Tasker JOB to use the BAT file to

perform an

automated periodic update.

Re: New AdAware (free)

That's nice, and would be extremely useful but for the fact that for many

folks, and starting only within the last few weeks, the downloaded DEFs

aren't working in '9x systems. And, in fact, if you read the DEF file

itself, it no longer includes Win9x versions in its list of applicability,

though none of it makes much sense, really. Why bother to continue

supporting AdAware SE with updates for some OSes, including NT4, and not all

OSes that can run SE?

Anyway, this is from the thread immediately previous to this one, "Ad-Aware"

(thanks to philo for finding the info):

Re: New AdAware (free)

Hi Gary:

That you for pointing this out to me.

I was naively assuming that def files for Ad-Aware SE would continue to run

on Win 9x/ME systems. As you say, it doesn't make sense to change the def

file to drop Win 9x/ME support, when the only purpose of continuing to use

Ad-Aware Se is to run on these older systems. Most users with Win 2000, XP,

and Vista PCs have moved to the newer Ad-Aware 2007/2008 versions of

Ad-Aware.

I'm sorry if I caused any confusion by suggesting that the Ad-Aware SE

updates would continue to run on Win 9x/ME.

Cheers,

O.J.

Re: New AdAware (free)

Fact is, I don't know for sure what's going on, or even that the new DEFs

won't run on ANY 9x system. I don't know that the DEFs file for Win9x is

different than for NT-based systems. Just haven't heard any reports of

success on 9x since the topic came up, and that link is the first indication

by anyone "official" that something may indeed have been changed.

Re: New AdAware (free)

Hi Again Gary:

I just read in the Win ME general forum that Ad-Aware SE users have been

experiencing the same problem of the latest def files not working with Win

ME, and appearing to act as if corrupt on Win ME systems. But the latest SE

defs *do* work, as you said, on my Win XP Home system.

For what it's worth ....

Cheers,

O.J.

Gary,

I was wondering what I have to do to uninstall the AdAware. Do I just go to

the Add/Remove to uninstall? Or do I do something else. I don't want to mess

up.

Re: New AdAware (free)

Just go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall. If you want to set up a Clean

Boot like I do (and otherwise clean up in preparation -- see my site), your

chances of problems go down. Just remember the caveat regarding Uninstalling

apps -- you want to reinstate the normal startup in MSCONFIG and NOT restart

before doing the uninstall.

How about this latest update for it...

....it says it's for W98SE anyway

I just booted to 98SE to check and you're right Gary, it does not work.

Thank you for the heads up, I should of tried it before I posted.

That website should not have that link still up there like that.

The last definitions file I have that works fine for her 1.06rl version

(which is the same version I have on 9x as well) is definitions

SE1R210 27.12.2007

Re: New AdAware (free)

That last working DEFs file you have is the last one available for updating

using the program's buttons. (Funny thing it, that still works! Try a fresh

install of AdAware and then update it using the procedures provided in the

app.) After that, you had to manually download the DEFs file and put it into

the proper folder. But, from what I've read, as of early-mid May, none of

the DEFs appear to work in the free version of AdAware SE in Windows 9x

systems.

Interesting tidbits, thank you.

I never really used AdAware on 9x that much anyway, occasionally for fun I

would start and run it for gp, and do the def update. It never found

anything important anyway but I'm sure that's true for everyone who is very

keen with the way they run their setups with care, you know what I mean

practicing SafeHex, and of course proper AV's, NAT's or SFW's, etc. I

never did install AdAware on XP ...and I may not - especially after looking

at the latest builds footprint - what in the world is going on.. ..how many

MB is it...40 ish. I hope they are not moving their app into the same

routine so many others are - by trying to get their app to do everything

under the sun.. ..it'll never see my disk then. Angel or anyone that has

v1.06 SE (or who wanted this lighter version could new install v1.06)

...could then update the defs by using that SE1R210 27.12.2007 defs.ref

file, since I suspect AdAwares ability to catch the minor stuff will be

just fine as is for a while to come yet. Angel you could just copy that

defs.ref back to the way it was, aamof if you didn't update it twice yet

then your last good one will be still there as defs.ref.old If you can't

find one anywhere I can send you mine, or Gary's I'm sure, or pull it out

of your backup partition image file <s>.

Well vacation week is over for me, and so it'll be back to the grind with

not much time left over for play...
