I know its a bit of a cheek asking a quesiton when I already have an issue running on another thread but in a way the issues are linked. I want to rebuild my PC as I have so many uninstalled programmes bits and bobs around and loads of stuff has been installed which I dont need so I thought a rebuild would be a good start. In order to do that I also invested in a new 500gb drive to act as my new c:\ drive as the old one had become very noisey and seemed ot be slowing down - ie read write operations took a lot longer on that drive than on the other similar drive installed on the same machne.

Anyway - to cut to the chase - when I ordered the new drive I failed to notice it was SATA2 and not SATA - (my fault - I should have read the spec) and when I tried to install it, alhthough the bios seemed to know it was there, the pc and OS did not. It would not install during a new install of XP and at the part where the install normally asks about the partition you wish to use I simply got a message saying no hard diisk was available. I put the HD into a caddy and still it was not recognised by any computer I attached it to even though I went through the disk managment area each time to see if it was there.

I have come to the conclusion this must be due to one of two issues - a) the HD is a dud - or b) SATA2 is somehow not compatable with my system as all other SATA drives seem to all work fine. Am I missing something here or shoulld I simply return the disk?

I would return it, once you have installed it to a caddy and then plugged it into a USB port, regardless of system type, it should have been recognised. It does look like you got a rare duffer.

Nev.

Another useful snippet...

Some older motherboards will only work correctly with SATA 1 drives, the BIOS will see SATA 2's but the OS will not install to them. Solution is to either move the drive jumper to tell the drive to run as SATA 1, or download the drive manufacturer tools CD ISO, burn and boot, then use the software to change to SATA 1 mode.

Its the fact that SATA was not natively supported in XP, you need to load the SATA/RAID drivers that came with the MOBO, at the F6 stage (when the XP install screen first goes to the blue DOS style) it says press F6 to install additional drivers (or along the lines of)

These have to be installed with a floppy drive and then the disk will be visible :)

If you didnt get a FLOPPY disk with the drivers on with the board then you will be able to download them from the manufacturers website

Many thanks for all the advice etc - I have learned a lot through all that and I now have had it confirmed by my local PC shop that my new HD is indeed a dead HD so am seeking a refund from the Ebay company that sold it to me as "new and in perfect condition" . Also discovered my friendly local shop is selling better drives at about the same price as I paid and that's without the P&P - another lesson learned - look local first eh!

If you are installing a new SATA HDD into Windows XP, you will need to install the drivers as I said above.

Glad it was just the HDD that was faulty but bear the process in mind..

I am still perplexed by the above comment - When I installed a new hard drive before on this machine there was no issue about SATA drivers. The XP install simply booted from the CD, copied a load of files then informed me that I needed to format my hard disk which I did. It then completed the installation and worked fine . Alas it was that HD which was noisy and eventually failed and which I have had to replace The install was done from a "Dell" disk so perhaps they have tweaked it so I dont have to install the SATA driver separately - anyway it worked without any other intervention.

I go along with what you say, OEM and Retail XP disks have no SATA drivers slipstreamed in with them, but manufacturer specific recovery CD's do as long as the original drive was SATA and not IDE.

Have you tried a new drive?

To check compatibility we could do with the PC details and drive details. If it is a Dell, the service tag is the best way to find out what board is in there, along with your new drive make/model.

Hi I have tried another drive - although it was an old one but it was wiped and formatted and then loaded the OS perfectly. The PC only has SATA drives. It is a Dell optiplex 755 - As my "new" drive is now in the bin - (seller refunded in full) I have to get another new one which wil be later this week. Not sure if to go for 1 1tb as its only 10 euros more!

To add to the above the disk I am using for the install is a Dell Reinstallation CD XP pro SP3 with the number P/N YH3KD and date of 2009

One of two things could cause the need for SATA drivers not to be loaded.

As mentioned the drivers are incorporated into the CD/DVD OS

The MOBO has the interface set to compatibility mode (this limits the speed of the HDD)

Knowing now that its a DELL disk I would say the 1st option :)

Be careful when buying larger size HDDs especially on a system that runs XP, most MOBOs (of the XP era) need a BIOS flash in order to recognise HDDs of 1TB+
