Which firewall is best for Win98se. I asked this question of the firewall group and

the security group and they pointed me to http://www.oldapps.com/. I did not see

Kerio there as someone had suggested. I am not sure that it works with windows

98..They also told me to change my OS or get a new P.C. Does anyone have a

recommendation? I downloaded Sygate 5.5 build 2577,but I am not sure it is suggested

for win98. I know the newer build up isn't. Any suggestions?

That's a difficult question to answer. IF one wants better security, then

one like you're presently using [rules based/manual allowance] is far better

than one that is setup for general usage.

This type may be daunting to setup as they constantly request information

on what to do with the connection or files until you have *trained* them or

written the configuration files. IF you don't actually know whether a file

or access SHOULD be allowed, then it really makes no sense to attempt to use

one of these as you might accidentally allow something that shouldn't be.

If you're having difficulties with setting up this type of firewall, then

the trade off is to use, perhaps, one of the old Zone Alarm versions. This

uses general settings, but is also less secure. Note also that it may have

some issues [see the site's history/update information].

MEB, In spite of the problems, I really liked Zone Alarm and felt secure with it. (by

the way, in the 9 years I have been using the computer (this one), I have never had a

virus, Trojan Horse or anything stronger than a tracking cookie. This I attribute to

asking for advice from people who knew more than I did. My son has had many, many. He

is brilliant at other things but won't take time to use recourses. Believe it or not

he calls me for help and sends his important data for me to store! I don't even have

back ups. That is why it is important that this computer doesn't die before I get a

new one.

Is there a version you can give me that I can download that works well with Windows

98se? They have very good forums (or had), and I don't have to write e-mails to

Russia that get answered 5 days later. Thank you. Ginny

I have been running Sygate Pro v5.5-2710 on my Win98 for quite a few

years. Prior to that I was running Sygate v4.x. Soon after I got Win98

I realized I needed a firewall.

ZoneAlarm, Kero, and Sygate were all popular then--I flipped a

coin and got Sygate. Sygate has served me well all this time.

I am using Sygate 5.5 2710 (the version for Win98SE) very

successfully, along with Avast, Super AntiSpyware Free, Spyware

Blaster. As a non-techie, this combination seems to keep my computer

very secure.

Again, this will be your choice, the best available is generally rules based

as I previously indicated.

Any recommended Zone Alarm is beyond support and considered as defunct, but

so is the OS so...

http://www.oldapps.com/old_version_download_ZoneAlarm.php

Perhaps someone can apprise you of what would be best for you, or you may

remember what version you were using.

I went right up to the last year or so before support end using ZA, but I

have no persoanl information on the last versions.

95 and 98 are vastly more secure than XP (let alone Disasta) not

to mention half of those OS's is not MS/RIAA/MPAA/NSA spyware

and backdoors.

Let's do this, try using Sygate for awhile, it won't take long to get it

configured, and see if you can live with it. If you can't, then I'll supply

some more information and dig out the old info,,, OR we'll help you setup

Kerio PF,,, sound like a good deal?

Re: Which firewall is best for Win98se

Hello:

If you are interested in installing Zone Alarm for Win 98/ME, go to the Zone

Alarm Free product page (

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp )

and click on the systems

requirement link

This will show, in part, the following:

Windows 98se/ME Support Discontinued

On July 11, 2006, Microsoft will end support for Windows 98, 98SE and

Me, which will have the resulting effect of making these operating systems

less secure (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx).

Windows 98/Me are older operating systems, and therefore inherently more

vulnerable to attacks than newer operating systems. Now that Microsoft will

no longer provide security updates to this operating system it will become

increasingly prone to security vulnerabilities.

Accordingly, Check Point will cease to support Windows 98/98SE/Me with

the introduction of our version 6.5 ZoneAlarm family of products including

ZoneAlarm® Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm® Pro, ZoneAlarm® Antivirus,

ZoneAlarm® Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm®.

Note about pre-6.5 products:

a.. Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me

operating system. However, there are a few new and advanced protection

features in ZoneAlarm products that will not run due to technical

limitations of this operating system. ZoneAlarm strongly recommends

upgrading to a supported and current version of the Windows operating

system.

b.. ZoneAlarm may end services to pre-6.5 products at any time."

So you will want to download the last build of Zone Alarm 6.1, which is

shown as 6.1.744.001 at

(

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html).

It can also be

downloaded from this page..

Cheers,

O.J.

Re: Which firewall is best for Win98se

Hi Gary!

My experience with Zone Alarm is that it does *not* rely on any definitions

updates, but stands on its own.

The only updating that is done (in my experience) is that of asking the user

for permission when a program on the PC attempts to access the Internet. It

does this my means of a simple dialog box when a program attempts to access

the Internet for the first time, or if the program executable has been

changed.

This record (rules) of allowed and dis-allowed programs in maintained in a

table that is easily accessed by the user in case they want to change any of

the permissions previously granted or denied.

HTH,

O.J.
