Repair install - not reading files properly

I had a problem with blank Device Manager after running SP3 on my desktop.

I was given various suggestions on fixing this by MSoft but eventually came

to a Repair Install then Clean Install if that did not work.

I did the Repair Install and all went well until it was reading in the

various xxxxxx.dl_ files from the CD-ROM. It kept failing to open these.

I used BROWSE and could see them on the CD-ROM but it would not open the file.

I tried the other CD drive but was the same.

I eventually found the same file on the C:\WINDOWS folder manually and used

that to keep the install going even though they might be the wrong version.

It worked in a fashion but there were a couple of minor problems.

I tried again yesterday and the same happened again but this time I had

prepared for it by putting a copy of the XP installation disc on both C: and

D: drive. Again it could see the required files but would not open. I just

clicked to ignore each file - it must have loaded many others with no problem.

There were a few error messages from the display drivers but it seemed OK so

I then ran SP3. This seemed to work OK and apart from a bit of time sorting

out the display drivers all is OK now.

Just wondering why it had this problem reading the files in, just in case I

ever need to this again.

Martin

PS

Device Manager now OK

either your cd drive is going bad, or the cd itself has developed a scratch.

RE: Repair install - not reading files properly

I have two copies of the XP CD-ROM, one had never been opened, I made a

backup copy of the CD-ROM also and that behaved the same.

I did not get an error message, just the files would not open.

It was different files each time.

Never had any reason to suspect my CD/DVD drives previously and both drives

behaved the same.
