Do I need to unistall AVG7.5 (I just use free version) before I download

AVG8.0? or will it just take the place of the old one? Or where can I find

updates for 7.5 cause it is going extint last day of May. I've head some bad

things about the new one. I have windows xp Thanks (yeah I know I'm not the

most compute savy)

Re: Update for AVG7.5

I've installed/updated maybe 11 computers to 8.0 from 7.5. The later

version will automatically uninstall the previous version. It is important

as you move through the install options to pay attention. AVG 8.0 will

try to "Slip In" a toolbar ( Unnecessary in my opinion ). So far I've

only had a warning appear about compatibility with older versions of

Easy CD Creator. The actual program seems to work OK, but as with

almost every newer version you get more features, options and things

that aren't always really helpful. ( Feature Creep & Options Bloat ).

Information about installing 8.0 is on the AVG website:

It is recommended to uninstall version 7.5 and reboot before installing

version 8.0, although installing 8.0 over 7.5 usually works out fine.

After Grisoft ends AVG 7.5 support, you won't.

Re: Update for AVG7.5

FYI - My .02 on AVG:

I got a call from family an hour ago - they use AVG 7.5

He called me 'cuz his PC just got the " Antivirus2008.name"

virus/spyware.

Open IE - redirects to 'their homepage'

He ran AVG prior to calling me and "AVG found it", but IE still won't work

correctly - gets a popup to " Buy our Antivirus2008 software now"

My question - if AVG FOUND it, why didn't it PREVENT it from being

installed ?

also , although it "found it", apparently it didn't "Fix it".

I read while searching that Yahoo toolbar will fix it for free and will

have him install that in the morning - fix the spyware - reboot - then

uninstall toolbar - reboot.

http://www.download.com/Yahoo-Toolbar-with-Anti-Spyware/3000-12768_4-10310984.html

I just thought AVG should catch/prevent the install ?

Lots of other places to get the info - just surprised at AVG failure.

Why ask HERE? AVG is not XP and is not even produced, sold or written

by Microsoft.

Ask elsewhere

A shorter, more helpful, and less argumentative response would have been

"Ask AVG"

AVG is certainly a program used on Windows XP computers.

Do you REALLY think that moron cares what you think? He's been

posting that drivel under several names for a few months now.

Nothing seems to stop him.

AVG 8 will remove the AVG 7.5 itself. It will give you a dialog saying it

has to be removed, and if you want the installer to go ahead and remove it.

Just click ok and it'll do it all on its own.

Re: Update for AVG7.5

The free version of AVG 7.5 doesn't protect the browser. Only the paid

version does. The free version of AVG 8 does have browser protection. Free

AVG does not have any malware protection worth speaking off, it is by far

only a virus protection. All other protection is very limited with the free

versions. AVG 8 has slightly better protection, but it is also heavier and

not as smoothly designed as the old ones were.

You could look at it differently: Microsoft made Windows so we have to have

things like AVG installed to be able to safely use it. So in a way posting

here is more than relevant as it deals with a significant issue regarding

the product this group is all about.

Upgrading did NOT work for me!

If you've already got AVG Free v8.0 installed and are encountering problems

or find that it's slowing down your machine, try the following:

1. Download a fresh copy of the installer, saving it to your C: drive (i.e,

C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe) =>

http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe

2. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed,

properly configured, and updated!

3. Carefully follow these instructions to (re)install AVG 8.0:

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338

Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email

scanners. Email Scanning provides no additional protection, it's a major

source of corruption and problems in Outlook Express/Windows Mail, and even

Symantec(NAV) says it's not necessary:

<QP>

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that

are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans

incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and

email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To

make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep

Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have

the most recent virus definitions.

</QP>

4. Configure AVG as you wish via the User Interface | Tools | Advanced

settings

5. Check for and install any available updates.

So?

So is Photoshop. So is WinDVD. So is a piece of software I use that

was custom written JUST FOR ME for a specific purpose.

That doesn't mean I should ask questions about them HERE.
