After I plugged a switched on xbox 360 into my outbound hdmi slot (don't ask why! :) ) I have had a problem with the laptop restarting on shutdown.

I have tried cmd shutdown

Shutdown in safemode

Restart computer on system crash switched off in computer properties

Disable restart in BIOS

Wakeup switched off on every device in device manager

Updating all drivers

Nothing has worked. I still have to take up the battery to get it to stay off!

Any ideas?

When you put the battery back in does it start up straight away or does it stay off till the power button is pressed?

If it starts straight away it could coincidently be the power button stuck down.

The other possibility may be damaged pins in the HDMI socket from when you plugged the X Box in to it, though I fail to see why that should make it re-start.

I have installed Windows, now how do I install the curtains? 😄

Hello Rik. It might be a problem with a registry value. Please download the attached archive and double-click on the file within it. It will ask you if you want to merge the data of the file with your registry. Answer yes to the prompt and then wait for the confirmation message to pop up. Once that is done, try and shutdown the computer and see if the problem persists.

Hi again, the suggestion from Goku may be the answer. I mentioned this to a friend who also works on computers, he found this happening after doing a reinstall of Windows, the cure he found was another reinstall as it seemed a possible corruption of a file in the first reinstall.

Hi Goku,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I had to go away for work after posting.

I tried the above with no luck.

However something I have tried recently seems to have changed the situation slightly in that when I now hold the power button down (instead of going through the start menu) it stays off. Any ideas what this could indicate?

Hi Rik,

the further we go the more it sounds like a corrupt file somewhere in Windows, though the suggestion from Goku didn't work, it could still be some registry value wrong.

The simple answer would be a Windows repair, this reinstalls the whole of Windows, but providing it is done correctly will not delete any data. However to do this you do need a full copy, preferably exactly the same level, for example Windows7 Home premium. Do you have one? if not can you get one?

Hello Rik. Seems to me that you just need to change what the power button in the Start menu does. Please follow the instructions listed here and see if they help or not.

Good luck. :)

Hi there,

I'm dealing with the same problem on a new Dell L702X. Genuine Windows Ultimate installed. From one day to another this behaviour occurs. I tried so much of proposed actions to solve this irritating problem, but none of them worked. I gues there is nothing left than a complete reinstall of Windows and other applications ...

Or does anyone found a solution already ?

Regards,

Arthur
